NVIDIA's $40 billion acquisition of ARM is basically a failure, while AMD's $35 billion (about 223 billion RMB) acquisition of Xilinx is about to be completed.

On December 31, AMD announced the latest progress of the transaction.

AMD said that regulatory approvals for the transaction are progressing smoothly. It was originally planned to obtain all approvals by the end of 2021, but it has not yet been completed and the transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.

AMD stressed that its communication with regulators has been very productive and that it expects to receive full approval.

AMD also said that there are no changes to the terms of the transaction and subsequent plans. Xilinx CEO Victor Peng will join AMD as president.

In October 2020, AMD announced plans to spend $35 billion (in the form of stock) to acquire FPGA giant Xilinx in order to enrich its product line and form a complete high-performance computing system with existing CPU processors, GPU graphics cards, and accelerated computing cards.

In the future, AMD is very likely to integrate Xilinx FPGA IP into CPUs and GPUs, thereby engaging in more targeted competition with Intel and NVIDIA.
