Melexis has launched the MLX90834 pressure sensor chip, which is designed for demanding automotive applications such as electric vehicle thermal management, further enriching its Triphibian™ series product line. This is a reliable, factory-calibrated MEMS solution that can accurately measure pressure from 2 to 70 bar in gas and liquid media. Its digital SENT output provides absolute pressure, diagnostic and temperature information, helping the system achieve higher performance and reliability.

The core competitiveness of MLX90834 comes from Melexis' unique Triphibian™ technology. This technology realizes accurate pressure measurement in gas and liquid media through innovative MEMS sensor design, even in high-pressure environments up to 70 bar. This versatility is achieved through a unique cantilever arm and tip sensing membrane structure, cleverly packaged in a compact SO16 package.


In electric vehicle heat pump systems, accurate monitoring of refrigerant pressure and temperature is critical. To effectively avoid damage to expensive components in the system, liquid media must be prevented from entering the compressor. To do this, the system must ensure that the refrigerant remains in a fully superheated gas state when it reaches the evaporator outlet. This can be achieved by accurately monitoring the pressure and temperature at the same point between the evaporator and the compressor, allowing the system to accurately calculate and regulate the superheat of the fluid using a smart expansion valve.


The MLX90834 uses Triphibian™ technology and has a digital SENT output function, which helps the system obtain accurate pressure and temperature data. Not only can the product be connected to an external NTC, but it is also factory calibrated to ensure better than ±1 oC measurement accuracy over a wider temperature range. The accurate pressure measurement results can be used to derive the equivalent temperature when the medium is in a saturated state (= liquid and gas coexist in the evaporator), while the NTC provides the actual temperature of the fluid.


The launch of MLX90834 provides strong support for the manufacture of heat pump components such as smart expansion valves. By embedding this digital sensor chip inside heat pump components such as valves, manufacturers can develop smart valves with edge computing capabilities. Combined with Melexis' deep accumulation in the field of sensing and drive technology, its motor driver chip can efficiently process data from MLX90834. This fusion measurement enables heat pump manufacturers to integrate system regulation functions directly into their components, greatly enhancing the overall value of the product. These locally controlled smart expansion valves have higher pressure and temperature sensing accuracy, effectively reducing the occurrence of overheating during the operation of the heat pump system, and further improving the overall operating efficiency of the system.


The MLX90834 has built-in sensor signal processing circuits, digital hardware, voltage regulators, and digital output driver chips. The piezoresistive element implanted in the sensing membrane forms a Wheatstone bridge to sense the pressure signal. The signal is amplified and converted into a digital signal, which is temperature compensated by a 16-bit digital signal processor (DSP) and finally output in digital (SENT) mode.


The sensor chip has built-in advanced voltage protection mechanisms that can effectively resist overvoltage (above +40 V) and reverse voltage (below -40 V) and is suitable for automotive and truck applications. At the same time, as an independent safety unit (SEooC) that complies with ISO 26262 requirements and supports ASIL C-level system integration, the MLX90834 can fully meet the latest electric vehicle safety requirements.
