In the automotive sector, DC motors are becoming increasingly popular in applications such as window and seat positioning. Direction sensing capability comes from complex quadrupole magnets, and the introduction of IMC technology to the MLX92211, MLX92221 and the new MLX92256 four-wire sensors allows for a more accurate solution using any magnet. This ease of use extends to the installation and setup phase, which only requires a rough calibration for spacing-independent sensors.

Designed in a mixed-signal CMOS process, the MLX92256 features lateral sensing capabilities. The device integrates a voltage regulator, two Hall-effect sensors with an advanced offset cancellation system (one with IMC), and two open-drain output drivers all in the same package.

The two Hall plates are integrated on the same silicon die and thanks to IMC technology the MLX92256 is not affected by the pitch. This is achieved by combining perpendicular magnetic field and lateral magnetic field.

The MLX92256 has two models. One is the MLX92256LSE-AAA-000, which provides pulse and direction signals. The pulse signal will switch when the lateral or vertical component of the external magnetic field changes, while the direction signal only changes when the direction changes. The other is the MLX92256LSE-ABA-000, which has two speed outputs, one for detecting the vertical magnetic field and the other for detecting the lateral magnetic field.

The speed (SP) output is latched low or high by a latching feature when a strong enough magnetic field is applied to the top of the package from the south or north pole, respectively. When the magnetic field is removed, the device retains its previous state.

The direction (DIR) output is latched low or high depending on a specific sequence of magnetic pulses in the direction of magnetic field motion on the two Hall sensors .

The MLX92256 is available in a green compliant 6-pin SOT package.
