The automotive semiconductor market is a huge growth opportunity, and Melexis is primarily focused on the automotive semiconductor market and has a solid foundation in this market. Although the growth rate of car sales has slowed down in recent years, the number of electronic products integrated into cars has been steadily increasing year by year. In recent years, many sensors have been installed in passenger cars to sense temperature, pressure, position and speed, etc. However, the demand for sensors is still showing a significant growth trend.
The current mix of engine technologies (such as internal combustion engines, hybrid motors, and electric motors), as well as the application of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and the upcoming driverless era, is also seeing a significant increase in demand for gesture sensors and LED sensors that help improve in-car comfort. In addition, as more and more small motors are used in cars, smart seats, trunks, and HVAC increasingly need to be electrified and automated. At present, the global trend towards low-carbon energy is becoming increasingly obvious, prompting traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to gradually shift to hybrid and electric vehicles.
Melexis focuses on three major trends: vehicle electrification for zero emissions, ADAS systems for zero traffic casualties, and personalized design for improved vehicle comfort. Our engineers focus on innovations in powertrain, chassis, body, and safety systems. Developing advanced integrated applications and solutions for these areas is our core business. In addition, we are also actively expanding the market for non-automotive businesses, striving to extend our business scope to new applications, new markets, and new areas such as two-wheeled vehicles, home and consumer electronics, industrial applications, and healthcare.
Sensors - The Soul of Automation
Melexis is a global leader in magnetic sensing. We continue to set new standards and advance the market for contactless magnetic position sensing with our patented Triaxis® Hall Effect Sensor technology. These sensor devices are commonly used to detect movement trajectory, position and speed, as well as sensing current. By using contactless sensing, these sensors are immune to wear, dust, dirt, humidity, heat and vibration. Triaxis® technology magnetic sensors are also widely deployed in other applications. Melexis' Triaxis® products remove mechanical assembly errors from the equation and simplify magnetic design, resulting in more robust applications that are easier to produce than other technologies. Melexis ' Hall Effect ICs can be used to detect the position of pedals, accelerators and steering wheels, as well as steering torque and gear selection. Triaxis® sensors can also monitor the movement of engines and drives and measure current in electrical systems. These products are also widely used in applications such as mobile devices, game consoles, computers and automation equipment.
Our latest Hall Effect current measurement solutions are the result of our extensive experience in this field, with millions of devices sold. They offer significantly improved performance and ruggedness, making them ideal for challenging applications in the fast-growing market of modern vehicle electrification. Melexis’s range of magnetic sensors enables robust and reliable contactless switching, replacing traditional mechanical switches (which are bulky, expensive and unreliable) in applications such as seatbelt buckles, brake and clutch pedals. Our unique programmable latches and switch ICs give customers greater flexibility in designing and manufacturing their end products.
Sensors enable many driving, comfort and safety applications in modern cars. Applications such as air conditioning, particulate filters, exhaust aftertreatment systems and electronic stability control systems would not be possible without the widespread use of sensor technology. Melexis has also developed advanced pressure sensors based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology , which cause temporary and reversible deformation of mechanical structures and then transmit the signal to the IC. Pressure is one of the most important sensor data, for which Melexis also provides the relevant signal processing interface IC to provide pressure data detection support for fully integrated pressure sensors.
MEMS technology is also used in our Far Infrared (FIR) thermal sensor arrays . In the automotive industry, array sensors are used in scenarios such as multi-zone air conditioning, passenger classification (for more effective airbag use), and driver monitoring (to prevent driver distraction). In consumer electronics, array sensors can be used in microwave ovens to measure the temperature of heated food. In IoT systems, array sensors can be used in a variety of applications in the field of temperature measurement and detection. The application areas of array sensors do not stop there. Our FIR array sensors are also used in low-resolution visual thermometers (used in building automation as well as industrial, security and DIY industries).
Perception is more than just devices that can interact with the world around them. Portable devices and living spaces, especially cars, must be able to sense users without being noticed. To improve the user experience, systems of all kinds need to interact in a more intuitive and natural way. Proximity sensors are particularly useful for detecting foreign objects and their location in one or more areas, while 3D Time of Flight (TOF) detection helps achieve completely contactless human-machine interaction. Melexis TOF sensors have extremely strong backlight and daylight filtering capabilities and can be used to identify 3D objects in harsh environments such as vehicles and factories. As autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles continue to develop, how to free the driver from other controls throughout the driving process has become a focus of the industry. Our TOF technology can play a vital role in such applications.
From engine controllers and ambient lighting to rearview mirrors, most electronic modules in a car are interconnected via the vehicle data bus, and the data flow between these modules constitutes the "consciousness" of the vehicle. Currently, most automakers build vehicle architectures based on two or more standard networks. The LIN (Local Interconnect Network) protocol has been widely used in low-speed bus applications, while CAN FD (Controller Area Network with Flexible Data-rate) will become the high-speed backbone of future in-car networks. The Melexis LIN portfolio can effectively reduce the bill of materials for many applications. Benefiting from the highly advanced technology, design flexibility and cost-effectiveness brought by a single chip, engineers can finally build a simple and commercially attractive semiconductor platform for users, develop smaller LIN modules, and further reduce the bill of materials.
It is not enough for the vehicle to detect its surroundings on its own. The real interaction comes from the combination of driving and driving. Intelligent motor drives for water pumps, oil pumps and powerful fans can effectively improve system energy efficiency. With patented TruSense™ technology, Melexis has achieved pioneering innovation in the field of intelligent motor drives and has now turned its rich expertise into practical results and launched a variety of different high-performance solutions. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors can be found in pumps, blowers, fans and positioning actuator modules.
However, not all actuator applications are located in visible locations inside the car. For example, microactuators in the HVAC system are one of the main actuators. These microactuators facilitate air flow to improve vehicle efficiency and comfort. The stable and worry-free operation of these drive and actuator modules all benefits from the stable data flow provided by LIN.
