MAX17853 supports different battery pack sizes using the same board design, shortening automotive application development cycle by 50%

now On July 18, Maxim Integrated Products, Inc (NASDAQ: MXIM) announced the launch of the MAX17853 battery monitor IC, providing a single-chip solution for automotive applications, helping them pass ASIL-D level certification and achieve a safer and more efficient battery management system. The MAX17853 is optimized for large and medium-sized battery pack designs for electric and hybrid vehicles. The device uses Maxim's unique Flexpack flexible architecture, allowing customers to quickly change module configurations and respond quickly to market demand.

In order to meet safety standards, automotive applications require the addition of redundant components to the system. The MAX17853 is currently the only single-chip IC in the industry that supports large and medium-sized battery pack configurations and meets ASIL-D level, enabling customers to create systems with the highest safety levels in terms of voltage, temperature, communication, etc. The advanced battery balancing system automatically adjusts each battery according to time and voltage to minimize the risk of battery overcharging and further improve system safety. Customers can achieve all of the above functions without adding additional components such as redundant comparators, further reducing the size of the solution. In addition, compared with competing solutions, the MAX17853 reduces the system BOM cost by 35%, helping customers achieve a lower-cost BMS solution.

Flexibility is also a very important factor. Engineers must design and verify the circuit board and bill of materials (BOM) for different module configurations. MAX17853 is the only IC in the industry that can implement multi-channel configuration (8 to 14 batteries) on a single circuit board. This saves customers' review and certification time and shortens the development cycle by 50%. For example, customers can use the same circuit board to support 8-cell and 14-cell module designs, reducing development time and certification work by half.

Key Benefits

  • Safety: MAX17853 is the industry’s only mid- to large-size battery pack management solution that meets ASIL-D requirements for temperature, cell voltage, and communication

  • Design simplicity: Flexpack architecture allows customers to change module configurations without having to redesign the board and requalify the circuit

evaluate

With this solution, automotive OEMs do not need to redesign the entire BMS system. Customers only need one circuit board to complete the configuration of multiple battery modules for different models.
