Infineon Technologies Launches Next-Generation PSOC™ Edge Portfolio, Delivering Powerful AI Capabilities for IoT, Consumer and Industrial Applications
Infineon Technologies AG has released details of the new PSOC™ Edge microcontroller (MCU) series, which is optimized for machine learning (ML) applications. The three new PSOC™ Edge MCU series E81, E83 and E84 are scalable and compatible in terms of performance, functions and memory options. They are all equipped with comprehensive system design tools and software, enabling developers to quickly transform concepts into products and bring new Internet of Things (IoT), consumer and industrial applications that support machine learning to market.
PSOC™ Edge
Infineon's new PSOC™ Edge E81, E83 and E84 MCUs are based on the high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M55 core, supporting the Arm® Helium™ DSP instruction set and paired with the Arm® Ethos™-U55 neural network processor, as well as the Cortex®-M33 core paired with Infineon's ultra-low power NNLite (a proprietary hardware accelerator for accelerating neural networks). In addition, all three series support a rich set of peripherals, on-chip memory, powerful hardware security features and a variety of connection peripheral options, including USB HS/FS with built-in PHY, CAN bus, Ethernet, support for WiFi® 6, BT/BLE connection and Matter protocol, etc. PSOC™ Edge E81 uses Arm® Helium™ DSP technology and Infineon's NNLite neural network (NN) accelerator. PSOC™ Edge E83 and E84 have built-in Arm® Ethos™-U55 micro NPU processor, which improves machine learning performance by 480 times compared to existing Cortex®-M systems, and they support Infineon NNlite neural network accelerator for machine learning applications in the field of low-power computing.
The target applications of the PSOC™ Edge E8x series include human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in home appliances and industrial equipment, smart home and security systems, robots and wearable devices. All three series support activation and control through voice/audio sensing, and the E83 and E84 MCUs provide enhanced features for the implementation of advanced HMIs, including machine learning wake-up, visual position detection, and face/object recognition. The PSOC™ Edge E84 series also adds low-power graphics display (up to 1028x768) to the rich feature set.
Empowering system design
PSOC™ Edge E8 MCU provides designers with a complete system and software compatible product line. Its hardware design support includes an evaluation baseboard with Arduino expansion interface, sensor kit, BLE connection for configuration, and Wi-Fi for smartphone and cloud connection.
Like all Infineon MCUs, the family is supported by Infineon’s ModusToolbox™ software development platform, which provides a range of development tools, libraries and an embedded runtime environment for a flexible and comprehensive development experience.
ModusToolbox™ supports a wide range of use cases covering consumer IoT, industrial, smart home and wearables.
Imagimob Studio is an edge AI development platform integrated into ModusToolbox™ that provides end-to-end machine learning development capabilities from data input to model deployment. Starter projects and Imagimob's ready models make it easy for users to get started. When used with PSOC™ Edge, Imagimob can quickly build and deploy the latest machine learning models for the edge.
