In the past, users would buy a device and find that
different brands of devices did not communicate with each other
. Sometimes the setup was complicated, and after finally setting it up, they found that the new device did not work with existing smart home products (such as smartphones, thermostats, security systems, etc.).
This incompatibility may be due to the fact that
there are too many standards for smart home interconnection
, such as
the Connectivity Standards Alliance, Z-Wave, Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
, etc. These standards are usually unable to connect to each other. Therefore, leading manufacturers in the smart home industry have joined hands to take further action to establish interoperability of smart home products and develop new standards, namely
the Matter standard based on the Internet Protocol (IP)
.
Matter's goal is to allow users to buy two Matter-certified devices and have them work together. Once this is achieved, consumers can confidently purchase smart home devices from different manufacturers without manufacturers having to add the required features for each large or even small market customer.
