The US may include SMIC in the trade sanctions list, which has caused a series of chain reactions. While the industry is concerned about the impact on the wafer foundry market, SMIC has been targeted by the US because it also supplies NOR chips for Apple Airpods to GigaDevice, a major NOR Flash memory manufacturer. The market is worried that GigaDevice's supply will be blocked, resulting in a supply cutoff for the NOR chips Apple needs, and orders are expected to shift to Taiwanese manufacturers such as Macronix and Winbond.

Previously, the NOR chip market was disrupted by the rise of Chinese companies such as GigaDevice. As GigaDevice may be affected by the US ban on SMIC, the leading Chinese foundry, the market is concerned about whether this will lead to a new rise in NOR chips.

Affected by the news of the possible ban by the US, UMC, World Advanced and other Taiwanese manufacturers are in direct competition with SMIC, and the market expects that they will usher in orders. UMC jumped up and hit the upper limit of NT$23.55 shortly after the opening, and closed at the upper limit, with more than 27,000 buy orders; World Advanced once returned to the NT$100 mark, and finally rose NT$2.7 against the trend to close at NT$96.5.

Macronix and Winbond are also expected to see an order transfer effect, with both stocks surging yesterday. Macronix rose more than 6% to close at 32.65 yuan; Winbond rose 0.35 yuan to close at 13.3 yuan.

Industry insiders pointed out that GigaDevice and Yangtze Memory are the two largest memory manufacturers in mainland China. Among them, GigaDevice focuses on NOR chips and microprocessors (MCUs), and plans to expand into NAND Flash and DRAM, which is similar to the development strategy of Yangtze Memory.

Currently, GigaDevice is the largest NOR chip supplier in China and the fourth largest in the world, while Yangtze Memory Technologies is focusing on developing 3D NAND Flash. GigaDevice's products are mostly produced by foundries, especially SMIC, while Yangtze Memory Technologies develops and produces them in-house.

Industry insiders said that GigaDevice has become the leader of NOR chips in mainland China, and SMIC plays a very important role in logistical support. After Liang Mong-song took over as co-CEO of SMIC, his first task was to increase production capacity and fully support GigaDevice in its sprint to gain NOR market share.

According to a survey by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, GigaDevice is currently one of the top ten customers of SMIC. Once SMIC is included in the trade sanctions list, it will not only seriously affect SMIC's wafer foundry business, but will also affect GigaDevice's supply.
