Recently, the signing and unveiling ceremony of the USTC-MediaTek "High-Speed Electronic Integrated Circuits and Systems" Joint Laboratory jointly established by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) Advanced Technology Institute and MediaTek Inc. (hereinafter referred to as MediaTek) was held at the Advanced Technology Institute.
At the media meeting, MediaTek announced that its joint laboratory with USTC will explore talent cultivation in practice and further promote the research and development and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements.
During the meeting, Dr. Guohong Lu, Vice President of MediaTek and General Manager of MediaTek USA, talked about the development of wireless charging and MediaTek’s efforts and breakthroughs in wireless charging technology.
Wireless charging is the general trend, and multi-mode cooperation is the key to breakthrough
With the development of the functional diversity of electronic products, the requirements for the endurance of electronic devices are getting higher and higher, but the battery capacity cannot be increased indefinitely. At the same time, industries such as electric vehicles and smart home appliances are also developing rapidly. People are paying more and more attention to the simplicity and convenience of related charging equipment, and streamlining or even removing the power cord is also on the agenda. Under such consumer demand, the development of wireless charging technology has attracted the attention of industry insiders, and quite a number of companies have invested in the research and development of related technologies.
According to research by relevant institutions, the global wireless charging output value was approximately US$14 billion in 2013, and is expected to grow by about 70% in 2015, climbing to US$23.7 billion. In terms of quantity, the global shipment of wireless charging receivers was approximately 20 million sets in 2013, and the wireless charging market is expected to expand to 700 million sets in 2018.
According to Dr. Lu, in response to the growing market demand for wireless charging, MediaTek launched the MT3188 chip, which is a highly integrated application-specific chip (ASIC) that uses multi-mode wireless charging technology. It can support resonant wireless charging technology and is fully compatible with inductive wireless charging transmitters certified by PMA, WPC and A4WP in the wireless charging field.
It is reported that the product is highly integrated and optimized, and does not require special external components, so the BOM cost is extremely competitive; it can be built into the motherboard of a mobile device or the battery back cover, and can provide a programmable output voltage of 1.5V to 5V and 1.4A (7.0W is the maximum value).
As major manufacturers increase their support for wireless charging technology, wireless charging technology is expected to explode in 2014. However, the three major standards in the field of wireless charging are competing with each other, which not only causes compatibility problems for users but also increases the cost of popularization. Dr. Lu Guohong said that MediaTek has joined the three major standard organizations at the same time and hopes that the three standards can be unified.
In addition, MediaTek's wireless charging product planning includes a charging pad that integrates tablets, mobile phones and wearable devices. Dr. Lu Guohong said that such a universal solution would be more practical. Regarding the current application status of wireless charging on wearable devices, Dr. Lu Guohong believes that due to the gap between the power requirements of wearable devices and smart terminal devices, MediaTek has only made relevant technical reserves and has not yet launched relevant products.
At the same time, Dr. Lu Guohong revealed that MediaTek has developed a technology that can charge and transmit data at the same time, which will be used in the field of wireless charging.
Under current technical conditions, wireless charging undergoes a conversion process from electricity to magnetism and then to electricity during transmission, and the energy loss in this process is much greater than that of ordinary transmission lines. Regarding the shortcomings of wireless charging in terms of efficiency conversion, Dr. Lu Guohong said that since there is no unified standard for wireless charging technology at present, and there is no leading terminal manufacturer at the user end, this has led to many problems in wireless charging technology that need to be solved urgently, and there is no solution direction that can form a joint force.
At present, the research and development of technology emphasizes the optimization of architecture design and circuit implementation from the perspective of system application, so the application and popularization of each new technology must be driven by the market. In fact, wireless charging technology was conceived by legendary scientist Tesla as early as the end of the 19th century. He planned to use the "Tesla coil" to construct a wireless power transmission network, but the construction cost eventually crushed this great dream.
The reason was not because of a shortage of funds, but because the society at that time did not have such high-end requirements for power supply. The work that could be done by just pulling a wire did not need the so-called "wireless". Time has passed, and the development of technology and market demand have finally proved that Tesla was right. Wireless transmission technology is playing an increasingly important role in our smartphones, tablets, and even home appliances. For MediaTek, occupying a high point in technology will be a necessary condition to pave the way for future development.
