Graphene is no longer a strange term to the capital market. As one of the most promising inventions in the 21st century, a series of inventions and creations of graphene have not only broadened the channels for its commercialization, but also kept this concept at a considerable "temperature" in the capital market. Recently, the concept of graphene has been heating up, and the Wind Graphene Index has achieved four consecutive positive gains. As an old theme in the A-share market, the current round of the graphene concept is inseparable from relevant triggering factors, such as the discovery of new commercial uses. According to relevant media reports, the 4th International Graphene Conference hosted by the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology will be held in Toulouse, France. The conference is the largest series of graphene conferences in Europe. Analysts said that the convening of the largest conference will undoubtedly stimulate the graphene industry, thereby providing a new opportunity for the rebound of the graphene concept. In addition, the short-term market volatility also provides a hotbed for concept speculation, so it is expected that the graphene concept is expected to continue to write a continuous positive trend.
Heavyweight Graphene Conference Series
Aroused widespread attention
According to relevant media reports, the 4th International Graphene Conference hosted by the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology will be held in Toulouse, France from May 6 to 9, 2014. This conference is the largest graphene series conference in Europe. Since its first launch in 2011, it has attracted widespread attention in the global graphene research field and has received active participation from industry researchers, industry decision makers and investors.
It is reported that this conference has invited 30 well-known research representatives from top institutions in the industry to give speeches. The theme of the plenary session covers the basic theory of graphene and two-dimensional materials, as well as the prospects and challenges of their large-scale synthesis and application.
During the conference, a series of special training programs were also set up, including: graphene-based related materials, material and device characterization, theory and simulation, global graphene research plan, project funding and research focus, etc. In addition, the conference also opened a special training on "Composites" for the current Graphene Flagship EU research project, which has attracted much attention.
At the Graphene 2014 conference, the global graphene research center will attend and participate as an exhibitor for the first time, thus building a good cooperative interaction network and platform for scientific research institutes, investors, engineers and enterprises. At present, more than 20 exhibitors including graphene research centers, investment companies, graphene manufacturers and publishers have confirmed their participation.
Coincidentally, the 2014 China International Graphene Exhibition (Graphene Expo 2014) will also be held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center from May 15 to 17, 2014. As an annual event in the field of graphene, the exhibition will take "internationalization, specialization, and high-level" as its conference requirements, and will invite industry giants from Europe and the United States, such as Japan, South Korea, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, and mainland China/Taiwan and Hong Kong to jointly discuss and exchange development opportunities for "graphene" and promote industry development.
Industry insiders said that the convening of two heavyweight graphene conferences will undoubtedly stimulate the graphene industry. As for the largest international graphene conference, as early as early April, the Metal Research Institute of Jinlu Group stated on the interactive platform that it would send people to participate.
Graphene flagship project continues to expand application prospects
According to relevant media reports, the EU Future Emerging Technology Graphene Flagship Project was recently jointly initiated by Wolfgang Bosch of the European Union, Ms. Karin Markides, President of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, and Tapani Ryhönen, a representative of Nokia, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Sir Kostya Novoselov, a professor at the University of Manchester and a graphene pioneer, attended the launching ceremony.
It is reported that the graphene flagship research project was selected by the European Union as one of the first technology flagship projects in January 2013. The project will run for 10 years with a total investment of 1 billion euros. It aims to bring graphene and related layered materials from the laboratory into society, bringing about a revolution in many European industries, promoting economic growth and creating jobs.
The above-mentioned graphene flagship research project is divided into two phases: the first is the initial warm-up phase of 30 months (October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2016) within the EU Seventh Framework Program, with a total EU funding of 54 million euros; the second is the stabilization phase within the Horizon 2020 program, which will start in April 2016 and is expected to receive 50 million euros per year from the EU.
Some experts said that graphene has important application prospects in electronic devices, optical devices, flexible electronics, lightweight functional components, advanced batteries and other fields, and is expected to have a significant impact on multiple industries such as electronic information. It is precisely because of the strategic importance of graphene that Europe has made great efforts to promote the commercialization of graphene.
From the perspective of graphene's application prospects, it can be used in many key areas such as electronic devices, optical devices, flexible electronics, lightweight functional components, advanced batteries, etc. Examples of new products using graphene technology include high-speed, flexible, and strong consumer electronics, and lighter and more energy-efficient aircraft. From a longer-term perspective, graphene is expected to lead to new computing technology paradigms and revolutionary medical applications such as artificial retinas. Researchers predict that the first graphene touch screen device will be available in 3-5 years. Given that touch screen devices made of graphene are durable, this will open up new avenues for flexible electronics, namely rollable electronic paper is another application, and samples are expected to be developed by 2015.
China's graphene power is rising
China already leads the world in the research and manufacture of carbon nanotubes and graphene, according to Lux Research Inc. in Boston, but a global oversupply is driving down graphene prices and profits, which could cause volatility in the nascent industry.
Lux predicts that the global market demand for graphene platlets and carbon nanotubes will be 1,520 tons and 2016 tons respectively in 2018. However, China's supply alone is sufficient to supply the global demand for graphene nanoplatlets until 2016; similarly, the total current capacity of China's carbon nanotube suppliers can meet the global demand until 2015. Lux believes that as the production capacity of graphene and carbon nanotube nanoplatlets increases and the utilization rate of production capacity increases, their prices will continue to fall in the future, squeezing the profit margins of nanomaterials.
China's frenzy to develop carbon nanotube materials is based on the financial support of the "12th Five-Year Plan" government plan. Although there is a lack of accurate figures on the funding of support funds, Lux estimates that the government's support will reach US$2 billion during the 12th Five-Year Plan, which is 2.5 times that of the previous five-year plan.
At present, China has become the world leader in graphene publications and patents, and its carbon nanotube manufacturing may account for 50% of the world. According to Lux's observation, although the process and manufacturing technology of graphene are still lagging behind, China is catching up rapidly. At present, China's carbon nanotube publications are in the leading position in the world, and the number of patents ranks second in the world. According to Lux's prediction, China will soon catch up in carbon nanotube material manufacturing, mainly reflected in the rapid growth rate.
Between 2013 and 2015, Cnano and Timesnano announced expansion plans of 500 tons and 100 tons respectively, which led to China's market share of their global production capacity increasing from 30% to 50%. Due to their cost advantages, complete customer networks and continuous financial support, Cnano and Timesnano are also seen as potential business partners for China in the future.
China has a bright spot in graphene manufacturing: Sixth Element and Ningbo-based Morsh, which have surpassed the United States in manufacturing graphene nanopetlets.
According to Lux data, China's domestic graphene and carbon nanotube markets will reach $22.4 million and $48.4 million respectively in 2014 so far, driven mainly by lithium-ion batteries and new applications such as coatings and heat dissipation materials.
In addition, China is also actively exploring the two directions of graphene film and graphene microsheets. In terms of graphene touch screen research and development, the research and development team of Changzhou 2D Carbon Technology Co., Ltd. has made breakthroughs in the application of graphene film in the touch technology of small and medium-sized mobile phones, and has achieved the connection between graphene film materials and existing ITO module process lines. At present, it is actively working with upstream and downstream enterprises, industry associations, and local standard institutes to draft relevant industry standards.
Industry experts said that the graphene film process line only needs a simple modification to the existing ITO module process line to complete the docking, and the industrial application of graphene film materials in the touch display field will be accelerated.
