Tsinghua Unigroup targets SanDisk and Toshiba for acquisition

Taiwan's Electronic Times quoted industry sources as saying that Tsinghua Unigroup is targeting NAND flash memory manufacturers SanDisk and Toshiba for acquisition.

Sources revealed that Unisplendor, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Unigroup, has reached an agreement to acquire about 15% of the shares of hard disk manufacturer Western Digital . Recently, China is trying to develop its own storage devices, DRAM and NAND flash memory technology.

As the next step in the DRAM field, Tsinghua Unigroup plans to make an equity investment in Micron and form a joint venture with the company. Tsinghua Unigroup is likely to acquire 10% to 20% of Micron's shares and establish a strategic alliance with the company.

Sources said that Kao Chi-Chuan, a veteran with a background in Taiwan's DRAM industry, will play a key role in the cooperation negotiations between Tsinghua Unigroup and Micron. Industry insiders expect Kao Chi-Chuan to join Tsinghua Unigroup after leaving his current position.

It is reported that China has realized that it will be relatively difficult to cooperate with Micron in the field of NAND flash memory because this technology is not independently owned by Micron. Therefore, Tsinghua Unigroup has set its sights on the technology held by Toshiba and SanDisk .

Acquiring the storage business of Toshiba or SanDisk would give Tsinghua Unigroup access to the companies' technologies and product lines and strengthen China's self-sufficiency in integrated circuit products.
