Japanese semiconductor companies maintain technological advantages in specific areas, such as Sony in CMOS image sensors and Toshiba in NAND Flash, but are gradually losing their global competitiveness in large-scale integrated circuits (LSI).
Kunihiro Asada, head of VDEC (VLSI Design and Education Center) at the University of Tokyo, said that the "detection field" will be the core of the semiconductor and electrical industries in the future.
In an interview with Nikkei Technology online, Asada pointed out that in the 1980s, integrated circuits required high performance, and in the 1990s, they had to achieve low power consumption. In the future, semiconductors will pursue a higher level of "dependability", especially in the social infrastructure of software aspects such as network systems and financial systems in modern daily life.
As "reliability" is increasingly valued, it is crucial for semiconductor companies to have talents who are familiar with this technical field. However, the biggest problem currently faced is that the training environment is not perfect.
Whether it is a fabless company that specializes in design, a testing company that is entrusted with testing, a fabless company, or even a manufacturing plant that uses semiconductors, it is necessary to ensure the presence of testers. Each position has its own required skills, and technical certification can become a stage of assessment to establish a more complete training mechanism for the company.
Although the outside world's impression of testers is not as glamorous as that of R&D and design personnel, as each link in the supply chain becomes more specialized and capabilities are segmented, testing will become another new core business model. Companies with testing capabilities can use this to increase their added value.
However, no matter how things change, the essence remains the same. Regardless of whether it is the semiconductor industry or not, if the pace of continuous innovation is stopped, the product value will undoubtedly decline and the technology will become obsolete. Once the number of testing companies increases, supply will exceed demand, and it will be difficult to make a profit. If you want to establish differentiation, the key is to continuously upgrade the accuracy of testing and respond to the new products and technologies that are springing up one step ahead.
