Apple's secret weapon for self-driving car technology
Source: Content from Huanqiu.com, thank you.
According to foreign media reports on December 11, Apple is developing a self-driving car project. In a recent interview, Ruslan Salakhutdinov, director of Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) research project, talked about the progress of Apple AI in self-driving cars.
Much of his talk was centered around the impact of machine learning on self-driving car systems. For example, he discussed how to detect cars and pedestrians on busy streets, navigate unfamiliar streets, and create detailed 3D maps of cities.
This speech provides new insights into Apple's self-driving car project. As Leifeng.com reported, in April this year, Apple officially obtained permission to test driverless cars in California; and in June this year, Apple CEO Cook also confirmed for the first time Apple's attention and interest in self-driving technology.
At the conference, Salakhutdinov presented data from a project that Apple disclosed in a paper published online last month. The project centered on using lidar to detect pedestrians and cyclists.
Salakhutdinov also discussed some systems that Apple had not previously disclosed, including one that creates software to identify cars, pedestrians and drivable sections of roads using images from one or more cameras installed on the vehicle.
According to the images Salakhutdinov showed, the system still performs well even when raindrops splash onto the camera. In some dangerous situations, such as when pedestrians are partially obscured by parked vehicles and out of sight, the system can also infer the position of pedestrians on the sidewalk. For this reason, Salakhutdinov also joked: "If you asked me five years ago, I would also be very skeptical whether this can be done."
After the presentation, another project Salakhutdinov discussed was how to keep vehicles equipped with the new system running as they move around the world. To this end, he mentioned a SLAM technology that can be used for real-time positioning and map building, as well as localized synchronization and mapping. SLAM is used in robots and self-driving cars, and also has applications in map making and augmented reality.
Finally, Salakhutdinov showed how Apple collects data from cars on the road and uses that data to build extensive and detailed 3D maps, complete with information such as traffic lights and various road markings. Most self-driving car prototypes require detailed digital maps to operate. Salakhutdinov also mentioned work on making decisions in dynamic situations, with one of the themes in his presentation PPT being a car circling a road map with pedestrians.
Apple has been slowly revealing its research results in the field of artificial intelligence, but it is not clear how much will be exposed. Apple's usual secretive style has led to not many outstanding academic and industry researchers approaching it. But Apple said it has been working hard to attract talent in AI, and Salakhutdinov's talk may put Apple's AI group in the spotlight and attract more scientists.
