In the first quarter (January to March), global semiconductor (chip) manufacturing equipment sales fell again, with sales in Taiwan and North America falling sharply, while China doubled, becoming the world's largest chip equipment market for the fourth consecutive quarter.
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) and the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) released statistics on the 6th, pointing out that due to the sharp decline in sales in the Taiwan and North American markets, global chip equipment (new product) sales in Q1 2024 (January-March) fell 2% from the same period last year to US$26.42 billion, marking the third contraction in the past four quarters.
In terms of regional sales, China's sales in the first quarter reached US$12.52 billion, a surge of 113% over the same period last year, making it the world's largest chip equipment market for the fourth consecutive quarter; South Korea's sales fell 7% to US$5.2 billion, surpassing Taiwan for the third consecutive quarter to become the world's second largest chip equipment market; Taiwan's sales plummeted 66% to US$2.34 billion, ranking third for the third consecutive quarter, with the largest decline among major markets.
In addition, sales in the European market increased by 23% to US$1.89 billion, sales in the US market decreased by 33% to US$1.89 billion, sales in the Japanese market decreased by 4% to US$1.82 billion, and sales in other regions decreased by 28% to US$760 million.
SEMI CEO Ajit Manocha pointed out that "although global chip equipment sales have fallen slightly, the overall industry remains stable and has the potential to recover. Strategic investments and demand for advanced technologies are expected to promote growth recovery in the chip equipment market."
The above data is compiled by SEAJ in collaboration with SEMI, which compiles the data provided by their respective member companies (semiconductor equipment manufacturers) every month.
WSTS raises its forecast for global semiconductor sales this year
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) issued a press release on June 4, stating that according to a forecast report released by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) on the 4th, due to the continued strong global AI-related investment, the demand for memory and some logic chips has expanded rapidly. Therefore, the global semiconductor sales forecast for this year (2024) has been revised up from the previous (November 28, 2023) estimate of US$588.364 billion to US$611.231 billion, an increase of 16.0% year-on-year, surpassing the US$574.084 billion in 2022 and setting a new record high.
WSTS revised up the global sales of chips (IC) in 2024 from the previous estimate of US$487.454 billion to US$517.457 billion, a year-on-year increase of 20.8%. In terms of IC details, WSTS revised up the global sales of memory in 2024 from the previous estimate of US$129.768 billion to US$163.153 billion, a surge of 76.8%; logic (Logic), including CPU and other products, was revised up from the previous estimate of US$191.693 billion to US$197.656 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.7%.
WSTS also predicts that global semiconductor sales will increase by 12.5% year-on-year to US$687.38 billion in 2025, setting a new record. Among them, IC sales are expected to increase by 13.7% year-on-year to US$588.425 billion, of which memory sales are expected to increase by 25.2% year-on-year to US$204.281 billion, and logic sales are expected to increase by 10.4% year-on-year to US$218.189 billion.
