World Advanced, a professional 8-inch wafer foundry, announced yesterday that a colleague at its Taoyuan plant tested positive for COVID-19 on the 17th and is currently in quarantine, but the PCR test results have not yet been announced. This is the first time that a semiconductor plant employee has tested positive through rapid screening, which has also made all semiconductor plants tense and not relax their epidemic prevention efforts. World Advanced said that the employee was not a direct production area colleague and the company's operations were not affected.

As the epidemic spreads, semiconductor factories all believe that the epidemic caused by the invisible virus is far more serious than the visible water shortage. In order to defend the most important production line of semiconductor chips in the world, wafer factories and packaging and testing factories including TSMC, UMC, World Microelectronics, ASE, Powertech, King Yuan Electronics and Chip Micro have increased the epidemic prevention level and required that personnel who have been to hot areas are not allowed to enter the factory area.

World said that upon learning the news on the 17th, in addition to fully assisting the colleague, it also immediately identified the contacts, took necessary isolation measures, and carried out comprehensive disinfection of the factory to prevent the possible spread of the epidemic; at the same time, it proactively notified colleagues, customers, partners and competent authorities, and strived to ensure information transparency.

After becoming the first wafer fab in the world to have an employee test positive in a rapid test, other major semiconductor manufacturers such as wafer and packaging and testing companies all felt the epidemic was gradually approaching, and all upgraded their epidemic prevention measures to the highest level to prevent employees from being infected with the virus and ensure that production operations remained normal, hoping to defend the world's most important chip supply line.

TSMC started the group operation mode at 00:00 on the 19th of this month. Each organization implemented the group diversion and working from home according to the plan. At the same time, it also notified all suppliers that if any employees live or stay in the Wanhua area for more than one hour during this period, suppliers must give priority to working from home and are prohibited from entering any TSMC factory area.

TSMC also requires all members of the supply chain to comply with the latest epidemic prevention, zoning and diversion measures, and has issued the highest restriction order, requiring that all outside personnel, except necessary manufacturers, be stopped from entering the factory. Internal personnel should avoid moving across the Hsinchu, Central and Southern regions, and proceed according to group diversion and traffic flow planning.

Major wafer foundries such as UMC and TSMC also simultaneously initiated zoning and diversion measures, with UMC starting as early as the 17th; TSMC implemented it on the 18th; ASE Technology Holding Co., Ltd., a major packaging and testing company, implemented diversion in its Taipei office as early as May 13th, and Zhongli, Taichung, and Kaohsiung also followed suit this week; other packaging and testing companies, including Powertech Semiconductor, King Yuan Electronics, and Chip Microelectronics, have also adopted similar epidemic prevention measures as TSMC.
