Technical Post | Play HTC Vive VR Games
When using HTC Vive, the main VR content comes from the Steam platform. Therefore, before starting the game experience, players need to download the necessary software.
Go to its official website (http://store.steampowered.com/) and click the "Install Steam" button in the upper right corner to install it.
After installing Steam, we need to download two software: SteamVR and SteamVR Performance Test.
Find these two software under Library->Tools and double-click their icons to download and install.
A. Hardware detection
Download the SteamVR Performance Test software to test your computer hardware to determine whether the current processor and graphics card meet the requirements of the HTC Vive VR environment.
B. Software Installation Settings
Download and install the SteamVR software. A VR icon will appear in the upper right corner. Click it to start. The SteamVR software starts.
C. Software Detailed Settings
c1. After starting the SteamVR software, enter the setting interface as shown below. HTC Vive supports two modes of experience: sitting and standing. The room setting is selected according to these two modes. Allowing players to stand and walk around the room to play games is a feature of HTC Vive. The laser locator is responsible for locating the game range, so the following settings are set to room scale.
c2. HTC Vive's spatial positioning is achieved through a laser locator. The space this time is 2.1 meters * 1.5 meters. The visual range of the laser locator is 120 degrees. Two positioning laser locators are placed on a higher and more stable tripod, and the distance between them should not exceed 5 meters.
c3. After the space meets the requirements, click Next. Set the laser locator, head-mounted display and controller to be turned on so that the SteamVR software can recognize the devices. Due to the location, the above devices have not been recognized by the software system at this time.
c4. Move the head-mounted display, operating handle, and laser locator to the specified position of the SteamVR software. When the prompt box icon at the bottom of the screen lights up, it means the device has been recognized.
c5. Start positioning the PC monitor. The player stands in the center of the space, points the controller at the PC monitor, and presses the trigger to continue.
c6. Place the controller on the floor to identify the depth and height of the entire space.
c7. The SteamVR system measures your available space, which should be unobstructed when you put on the head-mounted display.
c8. Define the game's action space, which is the horizontal range of activity. After the system detects the current device position, it can start to draw the action space.
c9. Press and hold the trigger of one handle and draw a movable space in the room, usually a rectangle with two laser locators as diagonal corners. The drawn space should remain empty from bottom to top.
c10. Once the action space is drawn, the system will display the actual available game space within the space you drew. Click the "Next" button to accept the current game range displayed in green. You can also click the "Edit" button to customize the size, position and direction of the game range.
c11.At this point, the SteamVR software settings are complete and you can start your VR gaming journey.
