Dialogue | Dr. Lisa Su, President and CEO of AMD
Recently, at the 2018 Taipei International Computer Show, AMD, together with many OEM manufacturers, exhibited new high-end notebook and desktop products based on Ryzen mobile processors, second-generation Ryzen desktop processors and Radeon graphics cards at an unprecedented scale of ecological industry. In addition, AMD announced the second-generation Threadripper fever-level Ryzen flagship product, and officially demonstrated the 7nm Vega GPU and 7nm EPYC (Xiaolong) server chip. At the same time, AMD also announced new milestones achieved by the EPYC (Xiaolong) processor: Tencent Cloud Server based on EPYC (Xiaolong) processor is immediately available, a new HPE single-socket system, details of the first Cisco UCS server platform, and the next-generation 7nm EPYC (Xiaolong) processor code-named "Rome" will start to provide samples in the second half of 2018.
After the press conference, AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su gave an exclusive interview to the media and answered questions about products, markets, industry cooperation, technology layout, etc. The following are some highlights excerpts.
Q
As far as I know, Chinese players are very fond of the second-generation Ryzen processors. Has the performance of the second-generation Ryzen processors met your expectations?
Dr. Lisa Su
right
We are very happy that Chinese players like Ryzen processors. In fact, we have higher expectations for Ryzen processors. As you can see, the performance of the second-generation Ryzen processors is really good! I think we have a great chance to continue to increase our market share. There are still many consumers who may be exposed to AMD Ryzen products for the first time, so we will set up AMD Ryzen dealerships in China and expand to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-tier cities to allow more ordinary consumers to experience the power of Ryzen. In addition, we can see that games are very popular in China, so AMD will continue to invest in game software and will continue to invest in related resources to optimize the performance of our Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards in e-sports.
Q
What are your expectations for the notebook computer market in the second half of the year?
Dr. Lisa Su
now
The plan is to launch 60 new models using Ryzen processors in 2019, most of which will be laptops and some will be desktops. This year has just begun, so you will see many new models launched during the summer vacation, the start of the school year, and the holidays such as Christmas. Many of the new products released today are thin and light models, which is also the focus of the second half of the year.
Q
Last year, AMD’s GPU collaborated with Intel on laptops. Will there be other collaborations in the future?
Dr. Lisa Su
Bundle
The final product produced by integrating our GPU with Intel's products is very powerful, and the evaluations we have seen for this system are very positive. I think we will see how this product actually performs in the market before evaluating the next step.
Q
Do you think the multi-core competition trend will continue in the future?
Dr. Lisa Su
many
Competition in the core processor market has always been going on, because we have been actively working in this field and continuously launching new products. Overall, such competition is good for consumers, as it allows them to have better product choices.
Q
What do you think about the deployment and development of EPYC in Greater China?
Dr. Lisa Su
Can
As we can see, the adoption rate of EPYC in Greater China is very high. We are very grateful to our many important and key partners in Greater China. These cooperation and development will continue. Now the development of EPYC is still in its early stages. In this market, we can see that EPYC has a very strong growth momentum, which will continue in the next few years.
Q
Having been at the helm of AMD for so many years, what are your views and impressions of it? What role does Greater China play in your vision? What are your expectations for it?
Dr. Lisa Su
I
We have always believed that Greater China is a very important market for us, from any perspective. In terms of R&D, AMD has established the largest R&D and design center in Shanghai. In terms of sales, our sales in Greater China are very strong. In other key areas, Greater China also plays an important role.
“At Computex 2018, we demonstrated how the industry’s most powerful CPU and GPU portfolio will get even stronger in the months ahead,” said Dr. Lisa Su, president and CEO of AMD. “Our upcoming 7nm and 12nm products build on the strong momentum of our Ryzen, Radeon and EPYC products and position AMD as a leader in the next generation of high-performance computing, from premium devices and gaming to machine learning and the data center.”
