Second-generation EPYC processors provide effective solutions for fluid dynamics workloads

The high performance computing (HPC) market has grown to a point where it is a key component in the advancement of new technologies in academia, as well as in many public and private sectors. Scientific research, public health, climate modeling, and oil and gas exploration are all examples of how HPC is driving innovation and knowledge discovery.


ANSYS Fluent is a general computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multi-physics tool. The software covers a variety of physical modeling functions and can model flow, turbulence, heat exchange and various reactions in industrial applications. In a node, up to 64 cores can be used per channel, including 8 high-speed memory channels supporting DDR4-3200. At the same time, each core also has super floating-point and integer computing capabilities, bringing excellent performance and scalability to HPC applications.

At the same time, memory bandwidth is also a key factor in improving the performance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) workloads. The high memory bandwidth of AMD EPYC processors helps ensure maximum utilization of the system, optimizing execution time and overall utilization of deployments. Many high-performance computing (HPC) workloads require balancing performance and per-core licensing costs to manage and control overall costs. AMD EPYC processors offer consistent features across the entire product line, allowing users to optimize the number of cores required for their workloads without sacrificing features, number of memory channels, memory capacity, or number of I/O channels. 8 memory channels can be accessed on all EPYC processors regardless of the number of physical cores per socket.

As workloads demand more processor cores, communication between cores becomes critical to effectively solve the complex problems facing customers. As cluster size increases, the need for communication between nodes increases rapidly and can limit scalability at larger node counts.
