The design of SOC is based on IP core, with hierarchical hardware description language as the main means of describing system functions and structures, and is carried out with the help of EDA tools based on computer platforms. SOPC (System on a programmable chip) is a flexible and efficient SOC solution proposed by Altera. It integrates the components required for system design, such as processor, memory, I/O port, LVDS, CDR, etc., into a PLD device to build a programmable system on chip. It is a programmable system with flexible design methods, which can be cut, expanded, upgraded, and has the function of software and hardware in-system programmability. SOPC is the result of the integration of PLD and ASIC technology. At present, the manufacturing price of 0.13 micron ASIC products is still quite expensive. On the contrary, SOPC chips that integrate hard-core or soft-core CPU, DSP, memory, peripheral I/O and programmable logic have great advantages in application flexibility and price. Therefore, some people believe that SOPC represents the future development direction of the semiconductor industry.
