Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the launch of a total of five SH7263 and SH7203 high-performance microcontroller products with a maximum operating frequency of 200MHz, integrating a SuperH?*1 Series SH2A-FPU CPU core and a host interface supporting the USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard v2.0 high-speed specification. Samples will be available in Japan from July 2006.
These new products offer higher speeds and increased functionality including various on-chip peripheral functions over Renesas Technology's current 120MHz operating frequency SH7261. The SH7263 includes an on-chip CD-ROM decoder and sampling rate converter, making it ideal for digital audio systems such as car audio and home audio, while the SH7203, which does not have an on-chip audio targeting function, is suitable for general consumer and industrial applications.
These new microcontrollers offer the following features.
(1) Comprehensive peripheral functions including USB host and display controller supporting high-speed specifications
These on-chip peripheral functions added to the existing 120MHz SH7261 microcontroller include USB standard (480Mbps) v2.0 high-speed specification host and function interfaces, and a display controller supporting WVGA resolution (800×480 pixels) LCD panels. These features provide capabilities for display systems and contribute to low-cost configuration of digital audio players by connecting USB flash memory, portable audio, or similar USB devices for high-speed data transfer.
Like the existing SH7261, the SH7263 also integrates an audio CD-ROM decoder and a sampling rate converter that can change the sampling frequency of audio data. These functions are essential for designing digital audio equipment and help control product costs. The SH7263 also includes a combination model equipped with an SD memory card*2 interface and an IEBus*3 communication controller; and the lineup of five products, including the SH7203 model without on-chip audio targeting functions, provides users with a product selection suitable for a variety of applications, including car audio, audio-visual systems, and industrial equipment.
(2) Approximately 70% higher processing power than previous Renesas products
The SH2A-FPU CPU core used in these microcontrollers adds an FPU (floating point processing unit) to the SH-2A CPU core for superior real-time control capabilities. Operation at a maximum operating frequency of 200MHz achieves 480MIPS (million instructions per second) (Dhrystone 1.1) of integer arithmetic performance and 400MFLOPS (million floating point operations per second) of floating point arithmetic performance. This represents an approximately 70% increase in processing power compared to the current SH7261, which runs at 120MHz and incorporates the same SH2A-FPU core. Furthermore, while previous MP3 products may have been limited to single-stream playback and similar digital audio signal processing, these new microcontrollers can also support high-end digital audio devices with the ability to simultaneously perform multi-stream playback and encoding processing of various audio formats, including AAC (Advanced Audio Coding).
(3) Software solutions include a variety of middleware
The software solution provides middleware compatible with a variety of audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. The superior processing power of these microcontrollers helps achieve compatibility with multiple codecs (CODECs) using independent software execution, and can also support DRM (Digital Rights Management) required for audio content protection processing throughout music distribution.
The SH7263 microcontroller series products, different models of prices range from 2000 to 2200 yen. The SH7203 product price is 1900 yen. The above prices include tax.
