VIAVI Solutions recently released the "Status of 5G Deployment" report, which is the fifth year that VIAVI has released this report. The report shows that despite the impact of the global epidemic, 5G network deployment has continued to grow in the past year, covering 1,336 cities around the world, with a growth rate of 350%. As of January 2021, more than 30% of countries in the world have deployed 5G networks.
As the fastest growing mobile technology in history, 61 countries around the world have deployed commercial 5G networks, an increase of 80% since January 2020. In terms of 5G coverage cities, the top three countries are: China (341), the United States (279) and South Korea (85). Among them, the number of 5G deployment cities in China has increased fivefold in one year, while that in the United States has increased fourfold. At the same time, the United Kingdom has deployed 5G networks in 54 cities, followed by Spain with 53 cities.
Last year, 27 new countries joined the ranks of deploying commercial 5G networks, including Canada (49 cities), France and Thailand (24 cities each) which have entered the top ten in terms of city coverage. In terms of regional coverage, Asia ranks first with 528 cities having deployed 5G networks; Europe, the Middle East and Africa ranks second with 459 cities; and the Americas ranks third with 349 cities.
“In 2020, as remote work, online education, and video chatting with friends and family became the new normal around the world, reliable network connectivity has become critical,” said Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer of VIAVI. “The strong demand for faster speeds and higher bandwidth has driven service providers to continue investing in 5G technology. The key to success or failure lies in the fact that service providers need strong test protocols and assurance of increasingly complex 5G architectures to provide optimal network performance and service quality.”
