High EMC Immunity RS-485 Interface Reference Design for Absolute Encoders [Copy link]

This high EMC immunity reference design demonstrates an RS-485 transceiver for drives and encoders such as EnDat 2.2, BiSS, Tamagawa, etc. EMC immunity, especially inverter switching noise immunity, is very important for position encoder feedback systems in industrial drives. The design supports a wide input voltage range of 5 to 15V (12V nominal) (used as output voltage to the encoder) to meet the wide power supply range requirements of the encoder. The power supply of the design provides overvoltage and short-circuit protection according to the voltage range of the selected encoder to prevent damage during a cable short circuit.

This design includes a BoosterPack plug-in module form factor with a connector compatible with TI LaunchPad development kits, making it easy to evaluate EnDat, BiSS and other systems with C2000 MCUs. The reference design has been tested for EnDat 2.2 encoders and is suitable for cable lengths up to 100m.

50Mbaud 5V Half-Duplex RS-485 Transceiver (THVD1550) with 16kV IEC-ESD and 4kV EFT Eliminates the cost of external ESD components
Designed to achieve the industry's highest IEC 61000-4-4 fast electrical transient immunity
Supports 4-wire RS-485 interface standards such as EnDat2.2 and BiSS or 2-wire interface standards such as Tamagawa
Hardware can be used as drive and encoder interface due to configurable clock direction
Designed to meet IEC 61800-3 EMC immunity requirements
