J-Link is a commonly used ARM debugger in the field of embedded development. Beginners are not very clear about the relationship between J-Link hardware version, J-Link driver and J-Link firmware. Here we will introduce them.
- J-LINK Hardware Version
J-Link has many models such as J-Link BASE , J-Link PLUS , J-Link ULTRA+ , J-Link PRO , etc. We often talk about J-Link V8 , V9 , V10 , which refers to the hardware version of J-Link BASE . How to check which model and hardware version of J-Link you are currently using ? Connect J-Link to the computer, and then use the J-Link Commander tool provided by Segger to check, as shown below:
Currently using J-Link ULTRA+ V4 version
- J-Link Firmware
Firmware is the program running inside J-Link . The official will release new firmware from time to time. We can choose J-Link firmware according to our needs. J-Link firmware upgrade and J-Link driver upgrade are not the same concept. Upgrading the firmware means changing the program running inside J-Link , while upgrading the J-Link driver means changing the J-Link driver on the PC . Not every upgrade of the J-Link driver requires an upgrade of the J-Link firmware. Use the J-Link Commander tool provided by Segger to view the firmware version. As shown below:
Upgrading the firmware can be done through J-Link Configuration , as shown below:
- J-Link Driver
The J-Link driver can be downloaded from the Segger official website, link:

Generally , the J-Link driver is installed with the IDE . After downloading the latest J-Link driver from the Segger official website and installing it, the J-Link DLL in IAR will not be updated to the latest version. In this case, you need to use the J-Link DLL Updater tool provided by Segger to update the J-Link driver that comes with these software, as shown below:
From the figure, we can see that the J-Link DLL in IAR 8.41 , IAR 8.22 , MDK5 , Tracealyzer 4 , and uC-Probe can be updated. Just check these software and click OK in the lower right corner to complete the update and upgrade of J-Link DLL in the software.
