Smart grid is a power grid that uses information and communication technology to collect information within the grid and can automatically coordinate based on the collected information (such as peer-to-peer information about power plants and energy consumption). Smart grid can improve the efficiency, reliability, and economy of power generation and distribution through a high degree of automation of the power system to ensure the sustainable development of the power network. Intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) are the basic elements of smart grids, providing the detection, measurement, protection and control functions required by the system.
The application of the concept of smart grid in the field of power transmission and distribution mainly means power automation and substation digitization. At present, the design of digital substations is mainly based on the internationally accepted IEC61850 standard. Within a digital substation, all IEDs will communicate in a manner consistent with the IEC61850 standard. IEC61850 mainly defines the following aspects, including: data modeling, reporting scheme, event fast transmission (GOOSE and GSSE), setting group, digital sampling data transmission (SV), command configuration and data storage.
This reference design is a joint project between ADI and Shanghai Yuanjing Digital Information Co., Ltd., which is committed to developing a universal platform for digital substation IEDs that meets the IEC61850 standard to meet the challenges faced by IED design.
• Realize “platform” development
• Complex communication protocols and multiple different communication protocol stacks
• Real-time requirements for very high signal processing capabilities and high system reliability
• Wide-area IED time synchronization
• Reduce system costs and development cost
