According to the latest list published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Apple has obtained a new patent for a foldable phone. When detecting that an iPhone/iPad with a flexible screen is in a falling state, the screen will be automatically folded to minimize screen damage.

The new patent is titled "Self-retracting display devices and technologies for protecting screens using drop detection". IT Home translated part of the patent description as follows:

Mobile devices with foldable and rollable displays can use sensors to detect vertical acceleration (e.g., acceleration relative to the ground) to determine if the device has been dropped.

If sensors detect that the mobile device has been dropped, the foldable device can at least partially retract to prevent the fragile display from hitting the ground.

When the vertical acceleration exceeds a predetermined threshold, a release mechanism of the hinge connection between the first display and the second display of the electronic device can be activated, and the scroll device can be automatically retracted.
