AR device company Magic Leap is expected to launch its latest AR device, Magic Leap 2, later this year. One of the main features of Magic Leap 2 is the 3D indirect time-of-flight (iToF) depth sensing technology jointly developed by Infineon and pmd.

According to Evertiq, the newly improved IRS2877C time-of-flight imager can capture the physical environment around the user and help the device understand and interact with it. The time-of-flight technology developed by Infineon and pmd can create 3D mapping of the environment, as well as real-time 3D images of faces, hand details or objects. This helps to achieve accurate environmental interaction with the device. In addition, the sensor can also enhance the gesture control of Magic Leap 2.

“We are introducing 3D imager technology in professional environments where precision and reliability are life-saving features,” added Andreas Urschitz, President and designated CMO of Infineon’s Power & Sensor Systems division. “The latest 3D Time-of-Flight technology will enable new augmented and mixed reality applications in healthcare and industry. It will fundamentally change the way we live and work.”

Increasingly, AR devices are applying these advances to industrial and medical settings. For example, Munich-based digital health technology company Brainlab is combining its patient-specific, AI-driven anatomical segmentation visualization software with Magic Leap’s spatial computing to provide surgeons with a greater understanding of a patient’s anatomy.
