On the morning of May 24, South Korean media ETNEWS reported that the iPhone 14 will be equipped with a more expensive "high-end" autofocus front camera, and some products will be produced in South Korea for the first time.
Apple has reportedly chosen South Korean company LG Innotek to supply the front camera for the iPhone 14 this time, along with Japan's Sharp. It is said that Apple originally planned to switch the front camera of the iPhone 15 to LG, but the plan was brought forward to this year.
The change was due to Apple reclassifying the front-facing camera as a "premium" part and Chinese suppliers failing to meet quality standards. The new front-facing camera is said to cost nearly three times as much as previous iPhone models.
The report also echoes previous rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the front camera of the iPhone 14 will support autofocus for the first time. Kuo previously said that all four iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, will be equipped with better front cameras with autofocus and a wider f/1.9 aperture.
The wider aperture allows more light to pass through the lens, improving image quality. Kuo says these camera upgrades could provide better depth of field effects for portrait mode photos and videos, while autofocus could improve focus during video calls. In comparison, the front-facing cameras on all iPhone 13 series have a fixed focal length f/2.2 aperture.
LG Innotek is said to be preparing to mass-produce its front-facing cameras ahead of the iPhone 14's launch in September.
