A few days ago, Tony was chatting with his colleagues in the office and talked about the development of mobile phones today.

Then I discovered a problem. Currently, the flagship models of domestic mobile phones are basically accustomed to claiming that they have 2K screens (3216x1440).

This is the case with realme GT2 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, OPPO Find X5 Pro, etc.

I took a look at Apple. According to what these domestic manufacturers said, the screen resolution of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is only 2778x1284, which has not reached the 2K range in their eyes.

What do you say? Your competitors are making a lot of money, but you don’t even have a 2K screen, so you’re considered high-end?

It’s just that users seem to be getting more and more picky in recent years, but not many people criticize the iPhone’s screen configuration. So has the iPhone really started to go bad in recent years?

In Tony's opinion, Apple has no intention of playing with concepts with Android manufacturers at all.

There are three main reasons. Let’s talk about the first one first.

First of all, in terms of screen parameter standards, the two major camps focus on different aspects.

I have said before that the resolution alone is not the only factor that determines whether the screen is fine or not. Even at the same resolution, different sizes and pixel densities will produce different results.

Perhaps some of you have noticed that "xxx PPI" is written in the screen parameter table of some mobile phones, which usually appears together with the resolution.

PPI is the pixel density, which represents the number of pixels per inch of the screen. The higher the value, the finer the picture.

There is a simple calculation formula, for example:

A 6.67-inch 1920x1080 screen has a PPI of about 330; if it is replaced with a 2K-level screen of the same size (3216x1440) produced by domestic manufacturers, then the PPI should be around 528.

This is also one of the reasons why it is generally believed that the higher the resolution, the better the image quality.

But the iPhone is different. They are used to using pixel density as the standard for screen setting, rather than the overall number of pixels related to resolution.

When Steve Jobs released the iPhone 4, he proposed a concept:

They put 960x640 pixels into a 3.5-inch screen, making the pixel density of the screen reach 330 PPI.

  iPhone 4 Launch

Then, for mobile phones, within a normal viewing distance, the screen pixel density can reach more than 300 PPI, and the human retina cannot distinguish the pixels.

This high-resolution screen that exceeds the limits of human eye recognition is the beginning of what is commonly known as the "retina screen."

Since then, the screens of all Apple products have remained above 326 PPI, and Apple has formed its own product standard.

This caused great hardship for the Android camp at the time, which had no choice but to upgrade products that did not meet the Retina screen standards to 1080P in order to stabilize the situation.

Later, as mobile phone screens evolved from LCD to OLED, Apple set a pixel density standard (458 PPI) that meets the needs of OLED screens and has adhered to it to this day.
