Currently, the most effective ways to improve the shooting quality of digital cameras are to improve the optical structure of the lens and increase the size of the photosensitive element. However, these two methods do not seem to work when applied to improving the imaging system of smartphones. Mobile phone manufacturers are constantly improving imaging quality through algorithms.
Recently, a foreign startup company, Glass Imaging, designed a new concept that can improve the quality of mobile phone photography through anamorphic lenses.
Since the sensor is rectangular but almost square in shape, if it wants to become larger, there is not enough space to accommodate the larger optical components that need to be matched with it. Glass thought of changing the aspect ratio of smartphone sensors to improve the image quality of mobile phones.
The solution is to compress the original lens into a "long strip" image, from the iPhone's 7x5mm to the ultra-wide format of 24x8mm.
The sensor is five to six times larger, which will result in better resolution, light-gathering capabilities, and dynamic range. Glass Imaging claims that the new concept will output images 11 times the size of an iPhone.
However, this type of anamorphic lens also has disadvantages, including the inability to add a zoom function to the lens, the autofocus performance also needs to be greatly improved, and there are distortions and aberrations.
Glass Imaging believes that distortion and aberration can be eliminated with newly developed software. Their goal is to provide image quality similar to that of a large professional DSLR or mirrorless camera.
Once the anamorphic lens takes the photo and the processor resizes it to the correct aspect ratio, it will be 24x16mm, slightly smaller than an APS-C size sensor, which is how the company is able to claim that its imaging area is 11 times that of the iPhone.
The sample images provided by Glass Imaging do suggest that this lens design idea is feasible, and time will tell whether any phone manufacturers work with the company to bring this lens to market.
