In the future development strategy announced at the end of last year, OnePlus stated that its digital series will continue to follow the high-end flagship route; the R series models (including OnePlus 9R and OnePlus 9RT) are mainly aimed at regional markets; the Nord and Nord CE series focus on the mid-range market; and the Nord N series targets the entry-level market.
To reflect this new strategy change, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 10 Pro in China three months ahead of schedule. The flagship will enter the global market in early Q2, where it will be launched together with two models in the OnePlus 10 series: the standard OnePlus 10 and the OnePlus 10R.
Some leaks earlier this month suggested that the OnePlus 10 will be powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 9000 chipset, while the latest news from an internal source claims that the OnePlus 10R will be powered by the Dimensity 9000 chipset.
The Dimensity 9000 is comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and the chipset has the same core configuration, seeing the Cortex X2 coexisting alongside the A710 and A510 cores, and a Mali-G710 with 10 shader cores.
As for why OnePlus used the Dimensity 9000 in the OnePlus 10R and not in the OnePlus 10, it has to do with North America. The Dimensity 9000 has an integrated 5G modem with global 5G bands, but it is limited to Sub-6 and lacks mmWave connectivity. Since networks in the United States rely on mmWave for 5G coverage, and OnePlus intends to strengthen its ties with T-Mobile and Verizon, the lack of mmWave connectivity prevents the Dimensity 9000 from being OnePlus' best choice in the region.
That’s why the chipset will debut in the OnePlus 10R, which will be limited to the Indian market. As for the rest of the hardware, the OnePlus 10R will have a 120Hz AMOLED display, along with at least 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Sources claim that OnePlus plans to launch the OnePlus 10R at the end of the second quarter of 2022. The reason for the delay is due to the OnePlus 9RT; OnePlus originally intended to launch the device in India as early as October 2021, but problems with OxygenOS 12 pushed the release date to January.
