According to 36Kr, it was learned from multiple independent sources that Tencent plans to acquire the gaming phone company Black Shark Technology. After the acquisition, Black Shark will be integrated into the Tencent Group Platform and Content Business Group (PCG) led by Ren Yuxin.
Sources said that Black Shark was valued at 3 billion yuan, and Tencent cut it down to around 2.6-2.7 billion yuan. Tencent declined to comment. After the transaction is completed, Black Shark Technology's future business focus will shift from gaming phones to VR devices - Tencent will provide content and Black Shark will provide VR hardware access. This also means that Tencent will officially enter the metaverse field in the future, just like ByteDance's acquisition of Pico.
Black Shark Technology was founded in 2017 with investment from Xiaomi. Tianyancha information shows that Tianjin Venture Capital Industry Co., Ltd., which is wholly owned by Xiaomi, is the major shareholder holding 46.4% of Black Shark Technology. Since its establishment, Black Shark Technology has launched several gaming phones. Industry data shows that Black Shark is currently the manufacturer with the largest market share in gaming phones.
