As the year draws to a close, major social media apps and technology companies have begun releasing annual reports to showcase their achievements, trying to mark the year with one thing after another. As usual, Apple will also announce the update rate of the iOS system at the end of the year.
However, the convention was broken. Not only did Apple not announce it, but even the high upgrade rate that it was proud of was unexpected.
According to a report released by data analysis company Mixpanel, the usage rate of iOS 15 system released in September was only 65.3% as of December 20 this year, while the usage rate of iOS 14 system reached 80.9% in the same period last year.
From iOS 12 to iOS 14, the usage rate of the new iOS system generally exceeds 50% within one month of its release. Compared with Android, this result is indeed impressive. However, this year, the usage rate of iOS 15 was only 34.1% one month after its release, and fewer people have upgraded to the new system.
iOS 15, not fresh enough?
When it comes to delicious food, gourmets always pay attention to whether the ingredients are fresh enough and whether the chef’s cooking can maximize the freshness of the ingredients. The same goes for system upgrades. To encourage people to upgrade, the new features of the iOS system must be fresh enough.
However, if you compare iOS 14 and iOS 15, you will find that the gap in freshness between the two is not small. Apple’s own introduction to the two systems is the best commentary:
iOS 14, reshaping the iPhone experience.
iOS 15 creates more extraordinary ways to maximize the performance of iPhone.
One is reshaping and the other is upgrading. The degree of change in the former is obviously far greater than that in the latter, and they are also changes that people expect.
Appearance is one of the changes that people can most easily discover and perceive. iOS 14 introduces desktop widgets and App Library, allowing people to customize the desktop and further improve efficiency.
Douban's daily movie widget is like opening a small window to your life, allowing you to read other people's stories. The weather and calendar widgets give you a glimpse of the day's events, eliminating the need to frequently unlock your phone to check it, which is a lot more convenient and makes the desktop more interesting and fun.
The appearance of iOS 15 has changed very little. Upgrading from 14 to 15 is like changing the phone of an iPhone. There is nothing new about it. You can only find small changes after years of use, but who would know at that time that this was a new system feature.
Judging from the attractiveness of new features, there is also a gap between iOS 15 and iOS 14. In addition to widgets and App library, iOS 14 also has many useful new features such as picture-in-picture, answering calls without full screen, and double-clicking the shortcut key on the back of the iPhone.
