Starting with the iPhone X series, Apple gradually turned to OLED panels. Since then, Samsung and LG, two Korean manufacturers, have become the absolute main screen suppliers. It is said that BOE is also involved now.
A source working in the screen component industry recently revealed to the media that there is a high possibility that the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max will continue to use a 60Hz refresh rate screen, mainly due to cost considerations.
It turns out that there are four iPhone 14 models planned, namely the 6.1-inch notch screen iPhone 14, the 6.7-inch notch screen iPhone 14 Max, the 6.1-inch hole-punch screen iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch hole-punch screen iPhone 14 Pro Max.
After the mini is cancelled, the new 6.1-inch will be the cheapest in the series, followed by the 6.7-inch. However, the cost of purchasing screens for Apple has always been high, and now the size is going to be increased, so the high refresh rate is likely to be abandoned.
The more realistic situation is that only Samsung can currently ship in large quantities the 120Hz LTPO panels used in the iPhone 13 Pro series. Apple’s bargaining power is not high and the latter’s production capacity is not enough to support three mobile phones with annual shipments of hundreds of millions of units.
Of course, it must be pointed out that at this point in time, the iPhone 14 series should still be in the EVT engineering stage, and Apple has not made a final decision on the mass production form.
