When 9-year-old Jayline Barbosa Brandao's parents were flooded with carbon monoxide from a backup generator in October, the Brockton, Massachusetts, girl took immediate action, unlocking her father's iPhone with Face ID and calling emergency services. It is learned that on October 28, local time, Brandao heard her father's shouting in bed. She ran to her parents' room and found her mother was overwhelmed by the odorless gas, and her father soon lost consciousness.

"I thought it was just a headache, and then two or three minutes later I felt nothing," the girl's mother, Marcelina Brandao, told the outlet.

Brandao immediately reached for her father's iPhone and held it up to his face to unlock the device. It's unclear whether the iPhone's Attention Awareness feature, a security measure that requires users to look at their device before granting access, was enabled.

After calling emergency services, the little girl led her 7-year-old sister outside to seek help from neighbors. Soon, Brandao's family was taken to the hospital for treatment and everyone is doing well.

"She's so smart," Brandao's mother said. "It was very scary. If (she) hadn't called right away, I don't know what would have happened."

The Brandao family installed a borrowed generator three days after they were without power as strong northerly winds wreaked havoc on large swathes of the east coast. Although the generator ran outdoors for just a few minutes before being turned off and brought indoors, carbon dioxide permeated the house at a measured concentration of 1,000 parts per million.

What Brandao may not know is that any user can call emergency services on a locked iPhone by following the on-screen prompts. Apple also offers an Emergency SOS feature that automatically dials a local emergency number by pressing the iPhone's volume and side buttons simultaneously.
