It was reported recently that Apple plans to launch two iPad Pro models equipped with LTPO OLED displays in the future. The news was confirmed by industry insiders that as the market for thinner and more flexible display panels expands, Apple will adopt OLED panels for the first time in the new iPad series to be launched in 2023. This decision may benefit Korean panel manufacturers.
According to the Korea Herald, OLED panels produced by Samsung Display and LG Display are rapidly penetrating more electronic devices, while the market share of lower-priced LCDs is being squeezed.
This year, Apple continues to choose Samsung and LG as the main suppliers for the iPhone 13 series. Market observers said that if Apple continues to order OLED panels from the two Korean companies, its decision to adopt OLED on the iPad will benefit LG and Samsung.
Data from market research firm IDC shows that Apple topped the overall tablet market last year, with annual sales of 53 million units and a global market share of 60%.
Accordingly, Korean panel manufacturers have been seeking to expand the application range of OLED. LG has been working to shift its market focus from large-size OLEDs for TVs to small IT devices, such as notebook computers; Samsung has also been trying to expand the size of commercial OLED panels to expand from smartphones to notebook computers and other larger device markets.
Some believe that Samsung can use its leading position in the small and medium-sized OLED market to win more orders from Apple. Market research firm Omdia predicts that Samsung Display is expected to ship 2.35 million OLED panels for tablets this year, accounting for 59.5% of the market share.
An industry insider said, "With the continuous growth of the automotive infotainment market and the portable gaming device market, the demand for high-response, brighter and clearer display panels has risen, and small and medium-sized OLED panels have broad growth prospects."
