According to mobile analytics firm Mixpanel, iOS 15 has been installed on an estimated 19.3% of devices since the update was released on September 20.
Mixpanel measures iOS installations based on visits to websites and apps that use its mobile analytics SDK, so the data is not official. Apple has not yet shared installation statistics for iOS 15, and the last time it reported an installation rate for iOS 14 was in June, at 85%.
So far, the installation rate of iOS 15 still appears to be slower than that of iOS 14. There may be several reasons for this, including that Apple has provided iOS 14 users with the option to continue receiving important security updates, several iOS 15 features have been delayed, and iOS 15 is affected by some early bugs that still need to be fixed.
For example, Apple said that an issue that prevented some iPhone 13 users from using the Apple Watch unlock feature will be fixed in an upcoming software update. The feature is designed to allow users to unlock their iPhones while wearing a mask, but some users encountered an error message that it "cannot communicate with Apple Watch."
There is also an iOS 15 bug, intermittent touch failure issues on iPhone 13 models, and other problems.
Apple is currently testing iOS 15.1, which includes at least a fix for the unlocking issue with the Apple Watch, but there is no timeline for the release of that software update. Apple is likely to choose to release a smaller update, such as iOS 15.0.1, to more quickly address some of the bugs and security vulnerabilities that have emerged.
