TSMC's Nanjing plant plans to expand production of 28nm process. It was once reported that it might be forced to stop due to pressure from the United States. However, the Investment Review Committee of the Taiwan region's economic department officially approved it today (28th).
According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, the Investment Review Commission pointed out that the process technology of TSMC's Nanjing plant was originally approved by the key technology team at 16nm, and the current expansion will use the mature 28nm process. The approved 28nm process expansion does not involve additional equity investment, and the existing plant is used to expand production capacity.
At the same time, TSMC has proposed strengthening IP protection measures such as physical factories and information access, as well as an investment plan to invest approximately NT$600 billion to NT$650 billion in Taiwan each year over the next three years, continuing to use the region as its main base and continue to create high-quality jobs in the region.
It is understood that TSMC's Nanjing plant expanded its 28nm process production mainly to cope with the current chip shortage among automakers and increase production of automotive chips manufactured using mature processes (28nm).
