According to the latest report from DigiTimes, Apple supplier TSMC is preparing to produce 3-nanometer chips in the second half of 2022, and in the coming months, the supplier will begin producing 4-nanometer chips.

Apple previously reserved initial capacity for TSMC's 4nm chip production for future Macs, and recently instructed TSMC to begin producing the A15 chip for the upcoming iPhone 13, which is based on an enhanced 5nm process.

Today's report outlines TSMC's longer-term plans, noting that the new 3nm chip process will offer a 15% performance boost and a 30% improvement in energy efficiency and will go into volume production by the end of next year.

While the report doesn’t offer any details on how the new 3nm chips will be implemented in Apple products, it’s safe to assume it’s still years away. Apple’s A14 chip, currently used in the iPhone 12 series and iPad Air, is based on a 5nm process.

Smaller processes deliver better performance and efficiency and allow more freedom in product design thanks to their smaller footprint.
