South Korean media reported on the 21st that the Galaxy M series to be released by Samsung Electronics in the second half of the year will use flexible OLED panels produced by BOE, which means that BOE's OLED panels will be used in Samsung smartphones for the first time.
According to industry sources, it is a foregone conclusion that BOE will supply Samsung with flexible OLED panels, as the specific display specifications, display driver ICs, touch ICs and other components have been determined, and related products are scheduled to be mass-produced in July.
South Korean media pointed out that this news is a crisis signal for South Korea's panel industry.
In the global OLED panel market, Samsung Display is ahead of its peers in both technology and mass production capabilities. Therefore, as of now, Samsung Display is the exclusive supplier of flexible OLED screens for Samsung smartphones.
LG Display has a slight advantage in large-size OLEDs. In addition, BOE has also begun to enter the flexible OLED market, and has surpassed LG Display in terms of shipments and has become a supplier to Huawei.
South Korean media believes that although BOE only supplies certain models of Samsung Electronics' low-end M series this time, the Chinese company has been recognized by Samsung in terms of technology, quality and price, so the two sides are likely to expand cooperation in the future. Samsung Display's revenue may be narrowed as a result.
A relevant person in charge of the Korean panel industry said, "As far as I know, BOE has offered a price comparable to that of rigid OLED for its flexible OLED." Although it is a low-end product this time, there is no guarantee that BOE will not expand the supply range and quantity of flexible OLED in the future.
In response, Samsung Electronics said, “We cannot confirm the details of future product and parts supply.”
