HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded smartphones and feature phones, had a good start in 2017, but as time went on, the company was unable to keep up with the stiff competition. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the Nokia brand held just 0.7% of the smartphone market.
Typically, research firms list only the best performing brands in their free reports. As a result, Counterpoint Research's free report on the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2020 does not include HMD Global (Nokia). But at the request of NokiaMob, Counterpoint shared some details about the performance of the Nokia brand.
According to the data, HMD Global's total mobile phone shipments increased by 30% in the fourth quarter of 2020. Shipments of feature phones and smartphones increased by 26% and 35%, respectively.
In other words, HMD Global shipped only 2.8 million Nokia smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2020, but shipped about 12.7 million Nokia feature phones during the same period.
As a result, Nokia became the second largest feature phone brand with a 16% market share in the fourth quarter of 2020. However, it only had a 0.7% share in the smartphone market, ranking 15th.
