The US Patent and Trademark Office has published a patent for Apple's eye tracking technology, which may be used in VR/AR headsets. Apple pointed out in the patent that this technology can identify the user's dominant eye to improve and optimize the accuracy and stability of eye tracking.
In the field of AR/VR, gaze tracking is a very meaningful technology. For example, due to the natural properties of the human eye's field of view, the device can use gaze tracking to optimize performance, focusing only on rendering the gaze area and reducing the visual quality of the peripheral field of view.
It is understood that the dominant eye, also known as the dominant eye, refers to the eye that the brain mainly uses to see things, just like our hands are divided into left-handed and right-handed.
The technical principle in Apple's patent is to identify the dominant eye by taking photos of the left and right eyes and comparing them with standard image data.
The benefit of adding dominant eye data to eye tracking is that it only needs to focus on analyzing the dominant eye data, which can not only optimize eye tracking technology, but also better align the optical axis and visual axis of the eye, resulting in better and faster calibration results.
In addition, identifying the dominant eye can also help users diagnose eye diseases related to vergence, such as strabismus or amblyopia. This technology can optimize the gaze point rendering technology based on the user's different eye data.
