The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced that AMD, a world-renowned semiconductor technology company, will work with supercomputer manufacturer Cray to build the world's fastest supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, USA. This computer is expected to be completed in 2021 and will focus on areas such as nuclear energy development and climate research. The contract is worth up to 600 million U.S. dollars.
The Frontier supercomputer will deliver more than 1.5 exaflops of processing power, powered by a new generation of customized AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). Researchers at the National Laboratory will use Frontier’s powerful computing power and new AI technologies to simulate and build models to conduct in-depth studies of interactions in meteorology, subatomic structure, genetics, physics and other important scientific fields.

In the past, Intel mostly occupied 95% of the supercomputer CPU chip industry, and the rest was monopolized by IBM. AMD has failed to provide the processors needed for supercomputers since 2012. Therefore, this cooperation is undoubtedly a glorious moment for AMD in the development of high-performance chips.
