A mobile ICU (critical care transport vehicle) from Anhui Provincial Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China, achieved information exchange and audio and video interconnection with the conference site of China Telecom's 5G Innovation and Cooperation Conference in Shenzhen through the 5G network. The high-definition video, medical equipment information, electronic medical record information and other data in the mobile ICU were clearly and smoothly transmitted to the Shenzhen venue in real time.

This marks the successful transformation of the first mobile ICU based on 5G network in China. It is reported that this is also the first "Smart Hospital 5G Joint Laboratory" in China jointly built by the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC and China Telecom Anhui Company.

The mobile ICU transformed with the 5G network is equipped with a 360-degree 4K panoramic lens. Based on the high-speed and low-latency transmission efficiency of the 5G network, it can realize real-time synchronous audio and video transmission of medical data such as real-time treatment conditions in the car, patient vital signs, medical records, medical equipment information, as well as vehicle location, road conditions and other information.

The person in charge of the Information Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China said that in the medical rescue of major emergencies and the transfer and treatment of critically ill patients, the application of 5G in the mobile ICU can extend first aid to the scene. Rescuers can implement life-saving treatment measures on patients in the mobile ICU, truly realizing seamless connection between the front-line medical team and the rear hospital base, greatly improving the mobility and capabilities of first aid.

Next, the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC will continue to cooperate with China Telecom and other relevant units in research and development to complete the information exchange and data connection between the mobile ICU and the emergency command center in the hospital under the 5G network. This means that in the near future, with the full coverage of the 5G network, the 5G-based mobile ICU will become a reality for the treatment and transfer of critically ill patients, and Anhui's medical remote emergency rescue capabilities are expected to be greatly improved.

It was also reported that the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China introduced a mobile ICU in 2016. So far, it has successfully completed more than 80 inter-hospital transfer and treatment tasks of critically ill patients, with a distance of more than 30,000 kilometers, opening a green life channel for critically ill patients in Anhui Province and even surrounding provinces and cities.
