Google has added a Photobooth mode to Pixel phones. When taking selfies in this mode, the camera will first recognize a person's facial expressions. When the expression meets certain conditions, the camera will automatically take a photo.
In this mode, there is a white progress bar on the top of the camera, which changes in real time. When the camera detects a facial expression that meets the conditions, it will automatically take a photo. Google explained that they worked with photographers to simulate five expressions, and when the camera detects these expressions, it will automatically press the shutter. The five expressions are "smile, stick out tongue, kiss/pout, puffy and surprise."
The camera's general AI algorithm scores the detected face, and when the score exceeds a certain value, the shutter is automatically pressed. There are four key indicators in this algorithm: first, whether the face is seen; if so, whether the facial expression is focused; and whether the corresponding expression is made; if all the above conditions are met, the camera will automatically take a photo, otherwise the progress bar will keep flashing.
Photobooth mode is currently only available on the Pixel 3 series of phones, and currently only uses the wide-angle front-facing camera.
This is actually a very interesting feature. In theory, it is also a kind of AI scene recognition, but instead of optimizing the picture after recognizing the scene, it determines when to automatically take a photo. This feature will make selfies between couples or multiple friends more convenient. Users no longer have to press the shutter manually, just find their own pose.
