China Mobile and Qualcomm jointly achieve the industry's first edge-to-edge collaborative rendering unbounded XR technology demonstration based on 5G slicing
— Demonstrating new industry breakthroughs in 5G edge-to-end collaborative separation rendering technology and 5G slicing technology —
June 30, 2022, Beijing - China Mobile, together with Qualcomm Technologies, successfully implemented and demonstrated the industry's first 5G slicing-based edge collaborative split rendering (split-rendering) unbounded XR technology demonstration. This demonstration opens a new chapter for the application and innovation of 5G slicing technology in the XR field.
The end-to-end demonstration of the XR technology of collaborative separation rendering of the edge based on 5G slicing was completed by using iQIYI Dream Pro VR all-in-one device (equipped with Snapdragon® XR2 platform), Xiaomi smartphone (equipped with Snapdragon® mobile platform) using China Mobile's terminal slicing solution, and 5G home small base station (based on Qualcomm® FSM100 5G RAN platform) developed by China Mobile Research Institute, Gongjin and Shiju. It verified that under the end-to-end collaborative separation rendering architecture, XR users can use the high-speed and low-latency transmission provided by 5G to coordinate the edge cloud side for real-time rendering, and combine the local optimized rendering on the XR terminal side to provide a low-latency immersive and boundless XR experience, laying a solid foundation for future XR users to enjoy lifelike visual effects and unfettered XR experience anytime and anywhere. Relying on the high-bandwidth, low-latency, and high-performance customized service capabilities provided by China Mobile's 5G slicing technology, the demonstration further verified the horizontal expansion capability of 5G technology, which can support the large-scale commercialization of new services such as boundless XR with collaborative separation rendering of the edge. In addition, the demonstration further verified that 5G home small base stations can provide excellent high-speed experience for multiple simultaneously online XR users.
Huang Yuhong, President of China Mobile Research Institute, said: "As a leading mobile communications operator in China, China Mobile has been actively exploring an integrated solution for XR, namely 'service-network-computing power'. How to use 5G slicing technology to enable 5G terminal users to obtain a better user experience is a key link, and this time a breakthrough has been achieved in the demonstration. This borderless XR technology demonstration adopts the Modem-Centric implementation introduced in the 5G Smart Terminal Slicing White Paper of China Mobile Research Institute, which is of great significance to the commercialization of 5G slicing services and is another milestone in the field of 5G smart terminal slicing. In addition, the small home base stations used in this demonstration will provide better network services for the application of emerging services such as borderless XR in smart home scenarios."
“Qualcomm Technologies is committed to driving the mobile ecosystem forward through end-to-end optimization of 5G and delivering outstanding 5G system performance for new use cases and experiences in XR devices and more industries, ” said John Smee, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm Technologies. “This unbounded XR technology demonstration combines the three core technologies of the Metaverse – XR, 5G and edge cloud computing. This is a successful practice of transforming the capabilities, concepts and flexibility of 5G design into innovative enhanced experiences. This demonstrates the company’s technological innovation and leadership in driving the development of 5G and the Metaverse for the next decade.”
