Support the Greater Bay Area in strengthening digital infrastructure and help build Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center
HONG KONG - Media OutReach - December 8, 2021 - China Mobile International Limited (CMI) announced today that the groundbreaking ceremony of the China Mobile Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Hong Kong Fo Tan Data Center (Fo Tan Data Center), which was invested and built by CMI, was officially held today. The Fo Tan Data Center is located in Fo Tan, Hong Kong and is expected to be put into service in 2025. After it is put into operation, it will be backed by the strategic depth of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and further enhance Hong Kong's status as an international information hub.
The Fo Tan Data Center will form the core data center system of the Greater Bay Area together with the other five core data centers that China Mobile has built and put into operation in the Greater Bay Area, and will work together with five international submarine cables and five Guangdong-Hong Kong backbone cross-border land cable systems to further enhance China Mobile's unique advantages of "complete self-owned data centers + cross-border international transmission resources + local 5G and fiber optic networks".
The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mrs. Carrie Lam, the Director of the Economic Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr. Sun Xiangyi, the Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr. Alfred Sit, the Vice President of the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association, Ms. Jin Ping, the Chairman of China Harbour Zhenhua Engineering Company Limited, Mr. Wang Yan, the Chairman of China Mobile International Limited and China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, Dr. Li Feng, the Chairman of China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, Mr. Sean Lee, the Director and Chief Executive Officer of China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, and Mr. Stephen Sham, the Director and Executive Vice President of China Mobile International Limited, attended the groundbreaking ceremony and witnessed this milestone moment together.
With the booming development of the digital economy, emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and industrial Internet are increasingly widely used. It is estimated that the global IDC market size will exceed US$143.4 billion by 2027[1], and the Chinese IDC market size will exceed RMB 320.05 billion by 2022[2]. This reflects the rising market demand for data storage and analysis. As the foundation of digitalization, data centers have ushered in a golden age. The newly built China Mobile Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Hong Kong Fo Tan Data Center is the best embodiment of CMI's efforts to consolidate digital infrastructure, help the Greater Bay Area's digital and intelligent upgrades, and fully support Hong Kong's development.
The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mrs Carrie Lam, said: "Data centres are important communications infrastructure for the development of the digital economy and smart cities. In order to promote Hong Kong to become an excellent data centre base in the Asia-Pacific region, the SAR Government has also actively introduced some preferential measures in recent years. The 1 million square feet of industrial land in Fo Tan invested by China Mobile International reflects the active investment and great confidence of the communications industry, especially China Mobile, in the development of data centre business in Hong Kong. With the support of the country, the excellent business environment in Hong Kong and the participation of our communications industry, I believe that Hong Kong's innovation and technology and communications industry will have great development in the future. I would like to thank China Mobile for its active expression of opinions and strong support for the government's various innovation and technology and telecommunications policies and measures."
Chairman Yang Jie of China Mobile Group sent a congratulatory letter to the event, stating that in the future, the company will take the construction of the Hong Kong Fo Tan Data Center as an opportunity to fully promote new infrastructure, integrate new elements, and stimulate new momentum, so as to help enhance Hong Kong's status as an international information hub and support the vigorous development of the digital economy in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Dr. Li Feng, Chairman of China Mobile International Limited and China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, said: "China Mobile attaches great importance to its development and layout in Hong Kong, and has always been committed to enhancing Hong Kong's status as an international information hub and promoting the integration of 5G into Hong Kong's thousands of industries. The groundbreaking ceremony of the Fo Tan Data Center has opened a new chapter in China Mobile's development history in Hong Kong. In the future, it will strengthen Hong Kong's 'new infrastructure' advantages, add digital driving force to Hong Kong's economic development, and contribute to Hong Kong's integration into the overall national development."
CMI is based in Hong Kong, assisting the construction of new digital infrastructure and continuously deploying high-quality network resources around Hong Kong. Following the commissioning of China Mobile Global Network Center in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong in 2014, the newly built Fo Tan Data Center will become CMI's second self-operated and self-built data center in Hong Kong. The Fo Tan Data Center will provide "massive" integrated services, integrating 5G communication services, cloud services, AI computing power and other services, serving Hong Kong and international users, and helping to build Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center.
CMI continues to expand its intelligent network that reaches the world, and actively builds a comprehensive and three-dimensional communication network resource system with "information highways (submarine and terrestrial cable resources)", "information stations (PoP points)" and "information distribution islands (IDC)" as its core. At present, CMI's self-built and self-operated data centers include China Mobile Global Network Data Center in Hong Kong, and data centers in Singapore, London and Frankfurt. It also has more than 70 submarine and terrestrial cable resources around the world, with a total transmission bandwidth of more than 100T and a total of more than 180 PoP points, achieving efficient aggregation and flexible scheduling of international traffic, and further improving the global computing power hub system.
CMI is committed to building a first-class low-carbon data center in Hong Kong . The newly built Fo Tan Data Center adopts green and low-carbon technologies, with an average power usage efficiency (PUE value) of less than 1.3, and achieves full life cycle + AI green energy saving, creating a new green "low-carbon" data center ecosystem from six dimensions: materials, water saving, energy and atmospheric protection, smart park, space management and air protection. Through the carbon neutral construction plan throughout the entire life cycle, CMI strives to build the Fo Tan Data Center into a leading, safe and green data center from six dimensions: efficient equipment, construction energy saving, renewable energy, green planting, artificial intelligence and green certification, and will apply for two green certifications: BEAM Plus and LEED Gold.
The Fo Tan data center will meet Tier III construction standards and upon completion will have a construction area of 103,660 square meters and a total capacity of 9,000 cabinets.
There is also an exhibition area at the groundbreaking ceremony, where guests can learn more about how CMI is focusing on global and "Belt and Road" layouts, actively expanding digital infrastructure, continuously improving service capabilities for customers in the Greater Bay Area, and using its global network coverage capabilities to help global operator partners, corporate customers and individual users connect the world intelligently.
