Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced that LG Electronics has selected Cypress's PSoC-based CapSense solution for its "LE" series of LED-backlit high-resolution digital TVs.
LG's design team chose the CapSense solution because it combines so many functions on a single chip while offering excellent noise immunity. A single CapSense chip can control touch buttons and more than 20 LEDs. In addition, it can configure LED effects and control a buzzer on the TV when a button is activated. The CapSense solution based on PSoC enables LG to dynamically reconfigure the capacitive touch sensing hardware to address various system noise issues while achieving the best sensing in the industry. No other existing capacitive touch sensing can provide such a high level of noise immunity, and it is this excellent noise immunity that helps LG easily and quickly meet stringent EMS (electromagnetic susceptibility) requirements that far exceed international standards.
LG's TV models using CapSense include the 42- to 60-inch LE530, LE540, LE550, LE650 and LE750 series. This new series of LG TVs gives users a taste of the future of online connectivity: broadband wireless HDTV, no more messy wiring, and a variety of other features that provide a higher level of user experience. In addition, the overall appearance has been optimized (including the use of CapSense to replace mechanical buttons) to enhance viewing pleasure.
“The LE series takes TV viewing to a new level with brilliant pictures and new features that greatly enhance the viewing experience,” said Dong Myeong Kim, chief R&D engineer at LG Electronics. “CapSense enabled so many features on a single chip, which made our design work very smooth. In addition, Cypress’s noise immunity algorithm and expert technical support enabled us to pass LG’s rigorous noise testing within a day.”
“This design win is a perfect example of the benefits CapSense can bring to customers, especially in terms of improving the overall user experience, which is at the core of product definition,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of Cypress’ User Interface Business Unit. “The LG TV is truly an outstanding product and we are honored to have helped bring it to market quickly, cost-effectively and with a great look and feel.”
About CapSense
Cypress' CapSense touch-sensing solutions have replaced more than 3.5 billion mechanical buttons in mobile phones, notebooks, consumer electronics, white goods, automobiles and virtually any system with mechanical buttons and switches, making Cypress the industry leader in touch sensing. The CapSense portfolio is the industry's broadest and most integrated, with superior noise immunity and water resistance capacitive touch interfaces, as well as proximity sensing technology that does not require direct touch, greatly improving industrial design and reliability. CapSense proximity sensing technology has an industry-leading detection range of up to 25 cm, reduces power consumption by activating the interface only when needed, and further improves industrial design by only exposing the interface when needed. Based on the PSoC programmable system-on-chip and PSoC Designer embedded system design tool, users can quickly and easily complete designs with pre-configured and certified "user modules" and real-time sensor calibration and detection.
