For most consumers, LED backlight is almost the most cutting-edge technology, and it seems to have a myriad of advantages in technology. But like other new technologies, the development and maturity of LED backlight has also gone through a considerable period of time, and LED backlight can also be clearly divided into generations. The most popular side-entry LED backlight method on the market actually has certain technical defects. As the latest generation of Full LED is getting closer and closer to us, it is necessary for us to review the development history of LED backlight along the footprint of time.

You can't have your cake and eat it too

We classify LED backlight types based on the distribution of LED lights. In the past, we were most familiar with the side-entry and direct-down types. The side-entry backlight places LED units on the upper and lower edges of the screen. It can be made very thin. Most LED TVs on the market are of this type. However, since the light source is mainly concentrated on the upper and lower edges, you will find that it is easy to cause a brightness depression or light leakage area in the center of the screen during use. The contrast of the central position is not high enough, and the contrast of the picture is vague. The direct-down backlight places the LEDs evenly behind the panel. Compared with the side-entry backlight, it can make the light source distribution more even and the local brightness and darkness control more precise, which effectively improves the picture display quality. Unfortunately, the direct-down backlight is more expensive and larger in size. Although it has certain advantages in performance, it is rarely used in actual products.

The best of both worlds

So is there a new backlighting method that can combine the advantages of edge-entry and direct-type while avoiding the shortcomings of these two methods? The Full LED introduced to you today can fully meet the wishes of users. The biggest difference between Full LED and the previous two generations of LED is that it increases the number of LED lights at a low cost, greatly increases the controllable area, and greatly reduces the thickness. Take a 55-inch product as an example. The total number of LEDs in the direct-type backlight is only 336, and the controllable partitions are 16. In the Full LED backlight system of the same size, the number of LEDs is as high as 1,200, and the number of independently controllable partitions reaches 240. At this time, the thinnest thickness of the Full LED backlight can be reduced to 23.3mm. These exciting figures witness that the LED backlight mode, the quantitative change of the number and distribution of LEDs, ultimately leads to a qualitative improvement in the display effect.

So what are the specific advantages of Full LED compared to the previous two generations of LED backlight? In fact, it is easy to think clearly based on the diagram we provide above and our explanation below, so that you can make a clear choice when buying a TV.

The light source of edge-entry LED is also mainly distributed on the upper and lower edges. It relies on the light guide plate to transmit light energy. Even if the efficiency of the light guide plate is high, it is definitely less efficient and uniform than the direct light source. Moreover, since the entire light guide plate is integrated, it cannot perform differentiated and personalized brightness control on a certain area, which can easily cause brightness depression or black screen leakage. The contrast in the center of the screen will often decrease, resulting in a vague contrast of light and dark details in the middle of the picture. Compared with Full LED backlight, edge-entry backlight is similar only in size, and it is fully Full LED backlight in terms of image quality.

Direct-type LED backlight evenly distributes LEDs directly behind the LCD panel, so the brightness uniformity will be improved to a certain extent. The contrast can be improved by controlling the LEDs in a certain area, thereby obtaining higher picture quality. However, at the same time, in order to ensure that the relatively dense LEDs have good heat dissipation, direct-type LED backlights are generally thicker. Although the picture quality is acceptable, due to its large size, which is almost the same thickness as ordinary CCFL backlight products, manufacturers seem to be less interested in promoting direct-type LED backlights. Full LED responds faster and more accurately to changes in a certain area, which makes Full LED stronger than direct-type LED in terms of regional control accuracy and final picture quality. In addition, it has made great breakthroughs in volume control, so Full LED has won the comparison with direct-type LEDs without any suspense.

High efficiency and energy saving

If you measure these three types of LED backlights from the perspective of durability and protecting user investment, you will find that although Full LED has doubled the number of LEDs, it does not consume much more electricity due to its higher photoelectric efficiency. On the contrary, the light load requirements for each LED unit are greatly reduced, which is beneficial for effectively reducing the heat generated by the LED and thus greatly increasing the service life of the Full LED.

Human beings' pursuit of quality and comfort is eternal. Through the various LED backlight schematics and analogies above, I believe that friends can clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of LED backlight types. Full LED has made great progress in display quality, durability, and lightness, representing the future direction of backlight technology.

Technology has become productivity

The good news is that the Full LED we are talking about today is no longer a far-fetched concept technology in the laboratory. It has now been installed in some of the latest models. Among them, LG has adopted the innovative Full LED technology in its high-end LEX9, LX9500 and LE8600 series products. Today, domestic users can already buy commercial models using this most advanced backlight technology on the market.

Recently, with the launch of Full LED models, users will feel the picture quality improvement and slim and fashionable design brought by Full LED. Full LED is likely to become a benchmark technology for high-end flat-panel TVs, just like the early Full HD led the full HD era, which continuously improved the performance benchmark of flat-panel TVs. After the new technology benchmark is established, users can enjoy the new technology earlier under fully competitive market conditions. Let us look forward to the wave of Full LED sweeping the high-end flat-panel market as soon as possible, and we are also happy to see that Full LED can integrate the two originally different trends of picture quality improvement and slim and fashionable design into one, avoiding the regret caused by users losing one for the other.
