Following NIO, Xpeng Motors and Li Auto, Leapmotor is about to become the fourth Chinese new car manufacturer to go public on the Hong Kong stock market.

On August 29, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange announced that Leapmotor had passed the listing hearing and would launch its IPO in September at the earliest. Some industry insiders joked that China's new car-making forces have already emerged as the "Four Little Dragons of Hong Kong Stocks".

Leapmotor mainly focuses on the new energy vehicle market with prices ranging from RMB 150,000 to RMB 300,000 . It currently offers four pure electric models: Leapmotor S01, Leapmotor T03, Leapmotor C11, and Leapmotor C01.

Data shows that Leapmotor's sales have beaten NIO, Xpeng and Li Auto for two consecutive months .

Along the way, with its Hong Kong stock IPO just around the corner, which industrial robot friends has Leapmotor made?

Jinhua Factory: Robots help 200,000 vehicles land

Around 2015, new energy vehicle startups in China were in full swing. Ideal Auto was founded in July 2015, while NIO and Xpeng were founded in 2014. Leapmotor also caught up with this trend.

Leapmotor was officially established in December 2015. Its founder Zhu Jiangming is also the vice chairman and CTO of Dahua Technology.

The establishment of Leapmotor was fully supported by Dahua Technology. Of the 100 million yuan registered capital, Dahua Technology invested 33 million yuan, holding 33% of the shares; Zhu Jiangming invested 20 million yuan, accounting for 20% of the shares .

It is good to lean on a big tree for shade. With the support of Dahua and the help of various investment companies, industrial robots can be seen everywhere in the Jinhua factory built by Leapmotor in 2017.

In the stamping workshop, Leapmotor uses ABB's seven-axis robot ; in the welding workshop, Kuka robots have been used in the engine compartment, left and right surrounds, lower body, secondary assembly and other links; in the painting workshop, the spraying line uses Dürr robots , covering UBC, UBS, door opening, painting and other processes.

Fengyuan Robotics Focuses on the field of aluminum alloy battery tray welding and provides a tray welding system for Leapmotor.

Deheng Technology Carried out capacity improvement transformation for Leapmotor T03&C11 welding automatic lines, increasing the cycle time of cabin/lower line/side panel/main line automatic lines from 13JPH to 40JPH.

As of now, the annual production capacity of Leapmotor Jinhua factory is 200,000 vehicles, mainly producing T03, C11, and C01. The Jinhua factory is equipped with electronic component manufacturing equipment, automobile manufacturing equipment, and R&D and vehicle testing equipment. The core vehicle parts independently developed and produced include battery packs, electric drive systems, headlights, etc., all of which have achieved production automation.

Hangzhou Factory - 4 billion yuan invites bids for industrial robots

To further expand its production capacity, Leapmotor plans to build a new factory.

Initially, the Hefei Municipal Government extended an olive branch to Leapmotor. In January 2021, Leapmotor formally signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Hefei Municipal Government, planning to build a second factory in Hefei, and Hefei invested 2 billion yuan in Leapmotor.

However, in the end, the Hangzhou Municipal Government intercepted the deal. In March 2021, Hangzhou Qiantang New District signed a contract with Leapmotor to build a new energy vehicle project with an annual output of 200,000 units . The total investment in the project is 4 billion yuan, of which 3 billion yuan will be invested by Hangzhou state-owned assets. It is expected to be put into production in 2023.

Under the pressure of production, Leapmotor Qiantang Base has been bidding frequently, and has successively launched public bidding for multiple projects in stamping, welding, painting, assembly and other links , and invited suppliers from all over the country to participate in the bidding.

In April this year, Ruisong Technology's subsidiary Ruisong Beidou won the bid for the "Qiantang Base Welding Line A and C Package" project with a bid amount of 215 million yuan and is expected to use 277 robots.

It is understood that A includes 6 flexible production lines including main assembly 1, main assembly 2, main assembly 3, side panel inner panel, side panel small parts and top cover, and C includes 9 flexible production lines including left and right front doors, left and right rear doors, front cover, rear cover, left and right fenders and assembly line.

At that time, the Qiantang base project had increased its planned annual production of new energy vehicles from 200,000 to 300,000.

Unlike the smooth construction of the base, Leapmotor's profitability is worrying. From 2019 to 2021, Leapmotor's losses totaled 4.847 billion yuan, of which the net loss in 2021 expanded by 158.73% year-on-year .

Therefore, even though it had passed the listing hearing, on September 9, some media still released the news that "Leapmotor suspended its US$1.5 billion Hong Kong IPO", forcing Zhu Jiangming to urgently clarify that the company's IPO in Hong Kong was progressing smoothly.

I believe that with the continuous improvement of automated production lines, Leapmotor will gradually achieve capacity expansion, costs will be diluted, and losses will be effectively alleviated.
