【Written by Sya】In the automotive manufacturing industry, new energy vehicles are the main direction of the global automotive industry's transformation and upgrading and green development, and are also a strategic choice for the high-quality development of my country's automotive industry. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of now, the number of new energy vehicles promoted in my country has climbed from 20,000 at the end of 2012 to 12.27 million, and my country's new energy vehicle industry has entered a period of comprehensive market expansion.

With the booming development of the new energy vehicle industry, the quality inspection of its body and key parts production lines has also put forward the requirements of automation and intelligence. The curtain of the second half of the new energy vehicle industry has slowly opened.

Earlier, at the 2022 (Fifth) Gaogong Robot Integrator Conference, Visionbit CMO Zhou Hongpu judged: "The transformation of automobile quality inspection from traditional inspection tools and manual inefficiency to online full inspection and intelligent and efficient is an opportunity for 3D vision companies to enter the automotive manufacturing industry."

3D vision enters the new energy battery market

With the explosive development of new energy vehicles, the safety of vehicles has gradually become the focus of people's attention. In recent years, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has repeatedly issued relevant policies to improve the quality standards of new energy vehicles, especially to further improve the safety level of power batteries.

In fact, defects in the production process of battery trays, such as burrs, defects, wrinkles, scratches, etc., may affect the safety of battery use. In this case, battery and tray manufacturers have increasingly stringent requirements for detection accuracy, detection speed, image transmission, defect analysis, etc., and the manufacturing process innovation and new requirements for defect detection continue to upgrade, which requires the use of machine vision technology to complete related work. Among them, 3D vision + AI technology can better help customers improve production and quality inspection efficiency.

For example, the pallet inspection for new energy vehicle batteries involves the inspection of the battery pallet's full size, incorrect or missing installation/anti-mistake, glue coating, weld slag, weld appearance, and single product flexibility. The inspection method is mainly offline inspection.

Zhou Hongpu pointed out: "In fact, online high-precision inspection, especially for large-sized workpieces, usually has a size of about 1.5mx2m and more than 1,000 measuring points. It has high technical barriers and has long been monopolized by foreign brands. Traditional mechanical inspection tools, three-coordinate measurement, structured light 3D scanning and other inspection methods have a high degree of manual intervention and are time-consuming, which has become the biggest bottleneck restricting factory automation mass production quality control."

As an AI+3D vision technology provider, Visionbit has independently developed a multi-eye vision full-size online inspection machine to face the many pain points in the detection of new energy vehicle battery trays. It is understood that the multi-eye vision full-size online inspection machine uses nearly 100 cameras, which can take pictures at the same time, joint splicing, and global comparison. It has high precision, fast speed, and wide coverage. It is suitable for large-size workpieces above the meter level. It can effectively solve the problems of small coverage and limited splicing accuracy of measurement technologies such as laser 3D scanning and structured light 3D imaging, and realize high-precision online measurement of the full size of new energy battery trays.

Zhou Hongpu introduced: "Offline inspection of new energy battery trays takes a long time and cannot meet the high-capacity online full inspection requirements of production lines. However, now using multi-eye 3D visual inspection machines, it only takes about 100 seconds to achieve full-size online measurement. The inspection content includes online measurement of thousands of inspection points such as position, surface contour, flatness, symmetry, concentricity, linear distance, and missing installation of large-size workpieces. The measurement results are presented in a concise and efficient visualization method. Through unique report design, 3D model mapping display, and friendly interactive interface, customers can be provided with accurate digital feedback to help them have a more comprehensive understanding of production quality and process adjustments."

At present, Visionbit's multi-eye 3D vision inspection aircraft has won many authoritative awards and applied for multiple domestic and foreign invention patents. It has been put into mass production in many joint venture car companies and leading domestic new energy vehicle battery tray companies.

Full-scenario layout of automobile manufacturing inspection

In the super track of new energy vehicles, Visionbit started from the pallet inspection of core components, power batteries, continuously breaking through technical barriers and application scenarios, and gradually applying AI machine vision high-precision inspection technology to the entire process of automobile production and manufacturing.

Shibit has successively launched a series of products including special machines for online measurement of vehicle body gap and flushness, special machines for visual inspection of vehicle body paint, special machines for vehicle body appearance inspection, etc., realizing high-precision online quality inspection of the entire chain throughout automobile parts processing, body-in-white welding, painting, and vehicle assembly, ensuring automobile production quality and efficiency, and helping automobile manufacturers achieve efficient lean production.

Zhou Hongpu said that the ultimate goal of visual inspection in the automotive industry is to achieve a closed-loop data system for process improvement. "For AI machine vision companies, they need to find core niches to break through and build a moat through data and process accumulation. The purpose of visual inspection is not just to find defects, but to use a large database to help automakers optimize processes."

In general, under the tide of new energy vehicles, the automotive manufacturing industry has an opportunity to rebuild. Under the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing, there is a blue ocean waiting to be explored, and 3D vision technology will have great potential. However, as a new track, the penetration rate of 3D vision in the automotive manufacturing industry is still low, and the market is still in the cultivation stage. 3D vision manufacturers need to continue to make efforts, guided by customer needs, to achieve rapid replication and promotion in the best landing scenarios, and accelerate the development of the industry.

Since its establishment, Shibit has taken "AI machine vision" as its entry point, oriented towards smart factories, targeting industries and scenarios with high technological barriers, and providing "industrial brain, industrial eyes, and industrial hands" with modular definition, lightweight extension, and on-demand call. Its core products have been mass-produced in heavy manufacturing, the automotive industry, and logistics, and have achieved large-scale delivery in multiple domestic and foreign markets including Central China, North China, North America, and Europe.

As 3D vision technology continues to mature and its application scenarios continue to expand, I believe that the application of 3D vision technology in the manufacturing industry will surely develop in the long run. In this process, I hope that 3D vision companies represented by Seebit can shine in the field of intelligent manufacturing.
